I purchased a new set of gears and chain and was told this was an easy install. However there seems to be a 1/8 to 1/4 in. of free play missing to get the unit (gears and chain - while gears are in the chain) to go on. does anyone know how this is done??

Depending on the number of teeth of gears and what chain, some go on very tight others are fairly loose! The sae chain will fit two diferent top sprokets! Assuming that the gears are the same number as your old and that you have the same number of pitch chain? Put the top gear just on the threads, then the chain on it, the bottom in the chain. Then line up the splines on the bottom and just start it, with the adjuster out or as loose as possible, lift the top gear and rotate the rotor til up can slide the sproket on! Then just push them both all the way and put your washers and nuts (or bolt) and hold the brake to tighten it! The adjuster should be tight, but there should be just a little play. Hand tighten the adjuster bolt and tighten the lock nut is what I do!

kccats: thanks for the reply. the gears have the same stamped numbers, with the same count of teath on each. the chain was an OEM version for low or normal altitudes for these gears. i would asume that you would get the correct chain/gear set when ordered together. How can one determine the chain pitch? it seems that the chain is not long enough. unless you rest both the threads and need to use some persuasion?

Ok, i did know there were 70 and 72 pin chains but ordered the 70 and the gears that go with it because the 70 is listed as non - high elevation. As I was driving today i thought that it seems that the new chain is 1 or 2 links short, or in other words needs to be the 72 pin chain. so my question is:
1: what benifit is the high elevation setup in the mid west?
2: and more so, why would you put a 72 pin chain on gears that have the teeth count for a 70 pin chain?

thanks
