Hi my uncle has a 84 yamaha vmax that has been sitting in his garage since the early 90's probably and i was wondering of i could buy it but he said he wants a $1000 for it lol I don't know how serious he is about that but its got only a 1000 miles on it and its in mint condition cosmetically anyway but do you guys think its a good buy and at what price? thanks

If it has 1000 miles on it and is in both cosmetically and mechanicaly in mint shape it would be worth it, but I wouldn't pay 1000 for a 84 vmax no matter what shape it is in.

The VMax is a very cool sled, but they were plagued by overheating and reliabilty issues in their first year. (not sure if that was '83.... or '84).
Plus, that's big bucks for such an old sled. I'd shoot him a lowball offer; all he can do is tell you no. Most people who have a sled they're not using realize it's not made out of solid gold, and they'll dicker.

HA!! Look what I got for $700 bucks! A 99 XC500!! That sled is NOT worth a minimum of 500 bucks in my eyes. Thats a 200 dollar sled in my eyes. Dont even come close to a grand! You can get SOOOOOOOO much better for a grand. lol, thats the dumbest price ive ever heard for a sled like that. Im still laughing...
^^ Calling me an Idiot?? Why? Is it because I think that sled is only worth 200 bucks? What I dont get is why people think old sleds are always worth 500 bucks no matter what. Thats a 1984, that hasnt ran in a long time, so its worth 200 bucks. I just bought a 1987 Arctic Cat El Tigre 530 for 40 bucks! Didnt run the greatest, but it ran!! I also bought a 1983 Yamaha SS440 for 20 bucks, and a 1980 Jag 340 and 1977 Snojet 440 that BOTH ran for 100 bucks. Thats a big waste of money!

the vmax is a good sled i wouldnt pay a g for it though ive got an 83 that i bought for 400 the 86 and 87 are more desireable . i know one thing my 540would spank the &h1t out of that xc 500 all day long and its 20 yrs older.

The Vmax was a very reliable sled if you did the normal maintenance to it. The didn't have any overheating or reliability problem,but the first year had a seal in the water pump that would leak once in a while. The 84's had a different seal and that ended that problem. The rear suspension was WAY ahead of it's time, Yamaha used that suspension up until the early to mid ninety's. I have had this sled sense it came out and the only time they act up in when people think that they can start messing with the jetting, Yamaha had the jetting pretty spot on so just follow the jetting charts and you will be OK. But I have to say that I think $1000. is a bit high, and would agree that $500.-$700. would be more inline as long as it is in GREAT shape.
If the sled only has 1000 miles and is in mint condition, there are people that will pay $2500 for that sled. If it indeed only has 1000 miles on it, and you end up purchasing it, please take care of it.

My buddy's dad had an 86 vmax until last year that was his sled. He just bought a 2010 nytro to replace it. The vmax is just an extra sled now, but still runs awesome. It would be a good sled to have that's for sure.
