One more question about my 1981 panther 4000
So many of you have all ready read about my panther 4000 and how I just installed a newly rebuilt engine, so I won’t Go over that again. However the oil pump wasn’t rebuilt, just cleaned, inspected and reinstalled. My question is that I’ve noticed when I start the engine up ( about once a week) that I notice excessive smoking until it warms up. I added about half a cup of oil to the gas and stirred it in before the initial start up. I was curious as to if the oil pump could be leaking into the block while sitting, causing some oil to get into the bottom end, which could be the culprit if my smoking. Is that possible?? If so , is there a gasket or o ring that I can replace to remedy that? Thanks and sorry for all the questions...

You are fine!
Every 2 stroke will smoke like crazy till it warms up!
If you start it every week that is the problem!
Do you take it out and ride it till it gets completely hot?

No I can’t ride it, snow is all gone here in Ohio. I do however start and let it run till it gets warm and yep, your right the smoke dissipates after a bit. So I have nothing to worry about then? Should I not start it once every so often and let it warm up and then shut it down? Thanks for your reply sir! I’m a newbie with messing around with these sleds and I know I get paranoid at times... thanks for your

LOL You just got the bug!
Do this, can you turn off your fuel?
If so turn it off and let it run out of gas!
Then when it first gets cold turn it back on and start it once a week, in November.

Drain the gas out of the tank. Start it up and let it run out of gas. This gets the fuel out of the carbs. Pull the plugs and put a little 2 stroke oil in each cylinder and turn over the motor to coat the cylinder walls. Put the cover on it and pick the rear up so it is not sitting on the track all summer. Your sled is now ready for a good summer rest. In the fall, put in fresh gas and fire it up!

Good ideas guys! I can drain the gas, and can also put shut off valves in the lines... gas, if I’m not mistaken is only good for 2 -3 months till it starts getting stale. So I think ill drain the gas and run it out of the carbs, then oil the cylinders. Thanks for all the helpful replies! Now for a cheep windsheild for my jag!

Yes pump 87 octane gas is pretty much crap in 30 days.
Many places here in Michigan sell what they call rec gas, supposed to be non ethnol.
You will pay more for it how ever and I still do not recommend leaveing it in the sleds tank all summer.

I used to when it was easier to remove the air boxes like the let the sled run then spray Marvel Mystery oil in the carbs throats till the engine died. Coated the cylinders and all the stuff inside of the carb(s).

Find pure gas AKA rec gas in your area.

I like to run this type of gass all the time as much as possiable. Never know when you may have got the sled ready and rode it then have an accident and can't ride for a while.

:D Al
