I have a 1999 zr 500 with 2600 miles...At how many miles do I have to do pistons and rings? I heard that there is a pin holding the ring from moving is that true?

There is a pin that keeps the ring from spinning. If it ain't broke....;) Do a compression test, over 120lbs it's OK.

Above 120 on all sleds. You may have to hone the cylinders and rering it soon, You'll have to check pistons first, probably won't have to replace those. Is it hard to start? Has it lost power? If not, don't worry....

Around 5000 miles people start to consider a rebuild if compression drops or something fails.

Compression Test

I have a Polaris XLT600 with over 6,000 original miles and the engine has never been apart and still has 132-135 lbs compression per cylinder with the throttle open.I would not worry with less than 3,000 miles.I know of avid riders that ride 5,000 miles per year on one set of plugs and one set of hifax.:D :p
