I have an 04 700 Classic with VES. At roughly 6100 RPM and above I get this noise like air is leaking or something wierd...hard to describe. Do the valves have a certain RPM range that they open in? I also noticed the clutch side exhaust gasket may be leaking. after our 100 miles today it was wet and gunk was on top of my starter. I do have valve gaskets so I will pull them tonight and have a looksee. Try to pick up exhaust gasket tonight as well.

Any ideas or input would be appreciated.

If there's any air or oil coming out of the VES through the hole on top, the bellows that lifts the guillotine is ruptured. The spring that is between the bellows and the bellows cover sets the RPM that the bellows lifts the guillotines out. 6500-7000 would be about right for that to happen. Plan on replacing the bellows, they go bad over time. If yours have not been replaced, it's time.

Nothing out of bellows, but any oil seapage is out of the manifold around the gasket, but it isn't that much.

It turns out that at 6100 RPM My starter gear likes to engage on the ring gear! How the hell does that happen. I noticed that half the teeth are left. On the stand it will wobble out and engage...or is there some sort of electrical current thing happening???

Old post but after new gear and spring, the problem is still there. I like having electric start, but would be nice to rev higher than 6000 rpm. HELP!

try looking for a bare wire somewhere maybe it only makes contact when the motor is torqued engaging your starter would have to be in the key harness somewhere and both wires would have to make contact with eachother for it to happen.maybe a low batt and big draw from starter melted wires together from to much draw unlikley but you never know.

Well tonight I went for a ride and the problem is still there. I unhooked the starter cable from the solenoid and the dang thing would still engage. So no stray voltage, must be vibration but why/how??

Is the clearance between the starter gear and the gear on the PTO / clutch correct? Is the gear behind the clutch reversible? If so, is it on backward? I'm wondering if there's some sort of vacuum being created by the specific RPM of the motor (clutch) and drawing the starter shaft out.

I had zip-tied the gear back and it still wanted to engage, I am baffled.

Yeah, I know guys i don't need the electric start, but I liked using it...when it worked.
