It's mostly important for sound deadening. It can also be useful in keeping the exhaust from melting the plastic of the hood.

Lots of foam has been removed over the years to reduce weight or because it has fallen apart. Some folks don't care about the sound level, and if the exhaust is too hot for the hood, you can purchase sticky insulated aluminum sheeting to line the hood. Most places online that sell automotive or snowmobile parts will also sell the insulated aluminum.

OEM foam pieces will be pretty expensive if you can find them. And the manufacturers quit supplying those kind of parts 10 years after the sled is made most of the time. So ebay looking for old NOS (New Old Stock) or a dealer that has old stock will be the only places to find the OEM parts.
