Got my 96 Touring SLE 500 running tonight. Bought it with engine in pieces, broken crank. Missing bolts, circlips, banjo bolts, you name it. Anyway, it was great to hear the engine running so smooth after putting it all together. I rebuilt the carbs, (they were black inside) and just adjusted them to factory specs and the sled starts and idles great.

Anyway, my speedo doesn't work. The cable is good, but it looks to me like the "Speedo drive insert" is missing, but it doesn't look like the cable had been removed before. Are they plastic? I'm going to pick one up tomorrow, but just wondering if the bearing got a bunch of junk in it when the insert blew up. Or, the previous owner removed it and lost it like everything else on this sled.

If it's like the speedometer drive in some AC and Polaris sleds, the drive key gets sheared when the bearing starts to fail. If that's the case, check the bearing on the driveline very carefully to make sure it's not bad.
