Don't go pods, all pods do is suck in hot air from the engine compartment. The air box pulls in cold air from outside which is a lot better then hot air going into the carburetors. No one is going to recommend doing that switch.
There is NO need to filter a snowmobile air.
I went to great length to duct the incoming Cold air from the hood opening for the head light to the air box, gained like 6 hp!
The other issue is snow/water ingestion. Airbox gives a dead air space in front of the carbs (that is why it is so big), Allows snow, water, debris to drop to the bottom of the box.
