After pulling the spark plug boots off I saw that the contacts were messed up and deformed. However, it runs just fine. Should I replace the plugs or would that not be necessary?

Yes the caps just to be safe. Is it worth having something melt down over 5-6 bucks in new caps? And if you do new caps then cut the wire back 1/4" so it has something new to screw into.

Also I doubt the spark plugs are messed up but pick up a spare set anyways unless you have one or two already then why bother just get new caps.

Nope that is pointless and tbh even when I managed multiple different parts stores including auto and heavy truck I never saw a replacement spark plug cap being sold. Replace the plugs and the caps. Don't cheap out.

Even if your sled were old enough to use the bare threaded end of the plug I would change the plug caps to except the Solid plug tops and then get the BR9es with solid tops
