Hello, I am wondering if anybody knows about or where I could find a can/pipe for my fan cooled 440 Indy. One that could give me a bit of a power increase if possible. I would really appreciate some help. Thanks!
Not many parts are available to increase the power on the fan engines. Fan engines do not shed the heat produced very well. Increasing the power above what is already there will generate more heat than the fan can eliminate, and can damage the engine. You may find some pretty good performance increases by installing new springs/ramps/buttons in the primary and secondary, and making sure that the carbs and primary and secondary are clean and set up to spec. Some companies used to make a clutch "kit" that added a bit of performance, as well.
No pipe as he said for those it won't work and just cost more problems. Clutching is done by switching out springs in the primary and secondary along with the secondary helix. Contact EPI, SLP, Goodwin or AAEN and see what they can recommend for clutching. Trust me not worth the trouble of even looking for a pipe let alone on a 440 fan engine.
My son owned a 440 XCF (98 or 99, can't recall). Thing with this motor is that the pistons are unique and rare. Last rebuild I did on it, I had to have a machine shop take another set of pistons and shave down the piston skirts to fit.
Then, after the rebuild, it blew the base gasket out because there is zero surface to hold it. (about 3 mm thick).
So I agree with others, don't make more of a headache. A can on that motor would do very little to increase power, if anything at all, and would most likely severely impact the reliability.
Not really sure about clutching making much of a difference either. If the clutch is good and has been cleaned and the ramps are fine, then it is probably transferring the best it can. Do clean it and check the ramps and rollers.
The 440 XCF was very popular with racers in that class, but they tended to rebuild them after every race or even a practice.
