-Top speed should be about 100 mph on the speedo (maybe 85 on radar)

-97 Horses

I had a 98 ZL 500 - similar to the ZR. Was happy with it but it was a pig on fuel!

I'm with ^^^ My brother had a 98 ZL 500 also and on bare ice it would show a little over 100mph on the speedo, taking into speedo error that would be high 80's or low 90's actual speed. The 500 is a very good engine and will hang with many of the 600's in its time.

ya the speedos are pretty optimistic lol, its sad when you think you were doing a hundred and you whip out the GPS and the speed is 10 mph less. Oh well. Thats what is on my ZL anyways, like exactly 10 mph ahead of itself

mine is a REALLY big pig on gas too. I took a Mountain Max 700 for today adn my dad took mine. When i got back the zr had in between emptie and 1/4 while the mountain max still had 1/2 tank.

That is a 500 twin against a 700 triple!

Yeah the 500 & 600 twins are very thirsty engines and about 85-90 miles to a tank is about all you will get out of it. Also the yamaha 700 triple isn't very hard on gas. My ZRT 800 gets better gas mileage then our older 98 zr 600 and zl 500's.
