I was checking the oil in the crank case of my 96 xlt sled I just got and the oil is thick and black and has lots of metal fillings on the tip of the dip stick and I clean it off and put it back in and get the same thing thick black oil with metal fillings. Im gona have to change the oil but is this normal looking oil and what could the metal fillings be?

I assume you mean chaincase. The oil should not have filings in it. It probably hasn't been changed since new. Take the cover right off the chaincase and inspect the chain, gears, bearings, etc before reassembly. Get a new gasket when you put it back together. Then put in fresh oil, synthetic if available to you.
