Hey im new to snowmobiling and i just bought two sleds a 91 indy 500 and a 91 prowler. i was just wondering things i should do before i go out and ride i dont want to break down...and how fast are these sleds?
75-85mph on the indy for sure... make sure to clean the carbs. check fuel filter. check oil filter. check oil level. check coolant on liquid sleds. change chaincase oil. look at spark plugs, replace/ regap if neccesarry. check track tension/ alignment. other than that just cosmetics and making sure you got spare plugs and tools
The Indy 500's are great little sleds and can easily hit 80 MPH. I bought 3 of them that were wrecked and engines were smoked. Each one had over 3300 miles on them. Once I put fresh top-ends in them, lubed everything, with fresh crankcase oil, fuel, 2-cycle, and coolant, these things rip. Ensure you run good 2-cycle oil. Even though they are oil injected, I always put about an ounce of 2-cycle oil per gallon of fuel to the tank. And of course, always have extra plugs....2-sets (4 total extra).
Some sleds have dipsticks, some dont. On my Indy....If I remember correctly, there are two holes/plugs on the chain case cover. Pull both plugs, the top one is the filler hole. Fill until oil seeps/drips out of the lower hole.
Chain case oil is some really snotty stuff...take your time and do not over fill.
i think its around 7 to 9 ounces of chaincase oil... you have to take the cover off to drain it then fill from the top hole till it comes out the bottom. then check the chaincase tension
I run Amsoil synthetic gear lube. I think it was 10 bucks for 355ml. Some guys run 80/90..some run just 10W40 motoroil. heck I drained a junk machine I bought a month ago and they had automatic transmission fluid in it. hahaha.
haha alright figured so ill just fun the 80w belray stuff i have...what about 2 stroke oil lol i have expenive stuff but not enough to fill the oil resivor and it would be expensive tryin to keep it full
I run Amsoil HP. I run quality oil because it is cheaper than engine parts. When you start replacing a crank and 2 pistons etc...gets expensive. I think its $12 for a quart and I can burn probably 60 litres of gas to it. Somebody said "The cheapest part of snowmobiling is buying the snowmobile!" Its the rest that is expensive!
2-cycle oil...I run quality stuff. And like I said, I add additional 2-cycle oil to the actual fuel tank....nothing wrong with a little extra oil.
As for the chain case, you CAN I use gear lube depending on temperatures where you live. It can hit -50 below where I live in Alaska....I could probably get away with using 10/30W or even ATF.
Do any of you guys Know how I could put reverse on my 1989 Indy classic? I can't find a kit. I know there was one once, but there was something else I had to do to the chine case,to work, can't remember!!Is there another way? Like, changing out the whole chine case with a another one off a 94-98 indy or something like that ???
Thanks Sport
Thanks That's what I was thinking of doing, selling mine . I will look up RJ Gleason just to make sure, cause I've rebuilt everything on the sled!!!
Thanks
I have a complete reverse kit. Came on a '91 Indy..You need the inner and outer case...along with the bottom sprocket and 2 smaller gears that go in the middle of the case.. I'd sell it but I would need the inner case off of one with out reverse and a regular 39 tooth sprocket..
I'm interested in your reverse kit. I think the gear in my case is 39. its stock, and its been a little while since I had it apart. I can take a look and get some picks!! what would you want for your kit?

you are right about replacing parts...ive talked to people that have been running walmart supertech 2 stroke oil in their machines for at least 5 years and they have never had a promblem..and it sells for like 10 bucks a gallon
I fixed up a 96 Indy 500 classic Touring this summer. Rebuilt the chain case , fuel pump, bored and hone the cylinders .02 oversized and added appropriate pistons and rings. Got it all together and have it so that it start great.
my problem is that when I have the back end lifted up I can rev...
My first snowmobile so I dont have much input on what it should be other than what I have heard. My sled does not move until about 4200 rpms, sounds high to me but ive heard both ways. Ive tried the belt that was on it, looks good the sides arent tapered or anything, and tried the spare that...
So I have a 96 xcr with 5000 miles on it. Last season it started to bog down. It runs fine for the first mile or so. Then it looses all power. It wouldn’t go above 25ish mph. It doesn’t seem to want to go over 6000 rpms. If I baby it for about 15 seconds then I can get it to go over 6000 rpms...
Just draining old fuel and getting my 2003 500 ready for riding. I have some fuel filters laying on my work bench (in the box of course). The machine doesn't have one on it. Is it a good idea to run one?
