Went to start the sled this season and the starter spins but wont engage to crank the engine.
Could this be a solenoid problem or possibly something greater?
Did a little research and wondering if it could have to do with the starter clutch? Sprag spring?
Leaving for a trip north in 2 weeks with my family and 6 older machines.
How should I troubleshoot this problem?
Thanks.

Not an expert on it, but I don't think they work like a traditional car starter with a solenoid &/or bendix. It is a one way clutch. I've heard the common failure point is using non-Yamaha oil in it, as it is a wet clutch, and if you don't have the right oil with the right friction modifiers, the clutch will slip/spin free.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your time.
I’ll try these suggestions.
I called Yamaha today. The mech said he thought the shaft was broken. I don’t think that’s it at all. He said he was working on one with a similar issue.
I have had the starter gear engage a couple times when I was playing with it.
