My buddy has a 1996 yamaha v max 600. His sleds tachometer is reaching 5000 rpm but he can only get his sled to 10 mph. To me this sounds like the spring in the clutch is broken and not pushing the clutch out enough. If you could tell me what you think i would appreciate it.

You need to diagnose if its an engine concern or a driveline concern. What happens when you lift the track off the ground? Can you spin the track by hand? Its not recommended to run the engine without a belt if you decide to see if the engine does rev higher without load.

one or both of the clutches is not shifting. a broken primary spring will usually make the clutch engage lower. as mentioned, go ahead and check for drivetrain movement but if that was the case the belt would be smoking.

sounds like some clutch cleaning, maintenance, and perhaps replacing of wear parts may be in order.
