Hi all, not sure if this is the right place for this but here it goes. I have the opportunity to pick up a 1995 Polaris Indy 650 rxl EFI with around 3000 miles on it. The owner is only the second person to own the sled and it has been stored in his garage. Here’s where it gets interesting, the seller said the sled didn’t see much use the last few seasons and when started this year (with 2 year old gas in it) ran fine for a few minutes and then stalled. When trying to restart the sled it fires sometimes but won’t stay running. I’m not familiar with EFI sleds (it would be the first EFI I own) and wanted the opinion of someone more knowledgeable than myself, but I figured this could be solved with a fuel system flush, new gas and possible cleaning the injectors? Correct me if I’m wrong. Other than the fuel problem the sled is in great condition with a rebuilt suspension, new seat and skis. Oh yea, I can pick it up for around $800. Looking forward to seeing if you guys think it’s worth it or not. Sorry about the long first post.:laugh:

If you don't mind some tinkering they are a great machine... They have their own set of troubles with the efi but can be overcome and will be dependable . I wouldn't recommend one to someone with no mechanical aptitude though .. There are hundreds of posts on how to fix just about anything you will encounter.

Thanks for the info, don't mind a little tinkering at all. Not new to wrenching on sleds just don't want to pick up something that has a lot of known major problems.

Also needs a good battery to make it run right too.
Ok, are these sleds prone to running bad when the battery's get weak/old? Also, would you happen to by chance know what battery it takes? I'll look it up but figured I would ask.

Good battery, fresh gas and some seafoam and it'll probably be good to go.
Kinda figured it would need some fresh gas. Should I put dome 93 in it or regular? Didn't know you could use seafoam in a sled, just put it right in the gas like anything else? Ive used it plenty of times in my K20 and my jeep but never thought of putting in the sled.

It works amazingly in sleds. Just put it right in with the gas. I would run 91. My RXL ran much better with 91 than 87. I'm not sure what you have around you for stores, but Runnings Farm & Fleet has a good battery for $40, the number is something with a 9 in it...I don't remember exactly. I ran those in my 1991 RXL and they worked good. Pretty much no matter what you're going to need a new battery every year so why waste money on an expensive one when you can get the $40 ones that work just as good.

Ok, I'll make sure I pick up some seafoam and put it in with the fresh gas when I go look at the sled again. I'll also make sure to pick up a new battery and make sure its charged. Anything else I should know about this sled or about problems caused by 2 year old gas in the efi system? Otherwise I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this sled and hopefully it turns out well. Thanks for all the help guys, and I'm sure I'll be back often!:laugh:

Well, after going to look at the sled again i decided I would pick it up. Worked on the sled a little today and have come to the conclusion that I will need to replace the fuel filter(s) and take the injectors out and clean them. I put 5 gallons of new 93 octane gas as well as some seafoam (as was recommended) in the sled and it still continues to foul the plugs. I'm going to check it out some more tomorrow and make a new thread in the Polaris section of the site with more details tomorrow.

How is the Battery ?????????
The battery, even after charging, reads 10.68 volts. I am going to replace the battery and change the fuel filter later today. Also might check on the injectors, not sure if there is a way to clean inside them or not. Also, not sure if anyone has a link or anything but I've been trying to find an owners manual online and haven't had any luck. I tried the link for manuals in the Polaris section but didn't find anything there.

A battery in those sleds will last 1 to 2 years before they usualy need to be replaced just one thing i didnt like about the efi

Yup, replacing the battery is definitely on the priority list as I have no idea how old the battery is and it seems like it only wants to hold 10.6 volts.

Just so everyone knows, I did get the sled running. I changed all the fuel lines, both filters and cleaned the throttle bodies. I'm pretty sure that the main problem was the fuel line in the tank that had broken off. Once that was fixed and everything was back together it started on the second pull, and has every time after. Thanks a lot for all the help, this forum has really been a great help.

Anyone got any ideas? i have a 1995 polaris rxl 650 efi. today i went riding and it started spitting and spudering. the battery is brand new. it acts like it is running out of gas. it runs fine on short rides. and has run great all year until today. my dad thinks the fuel pump is on its way out. anyone else think or anything?

I just picked it up off the trail and the battery has 11.40 volts. idk if the battery is defective or if it was drawing alot to run it. im going to charge my battery and see if it stays up. anyone else that has any idea on what could draw that much or what could be wrong let me know.

I have the clymers polaris shop manual 1990-1995. covers that sled pretty well. go pick one up. well worth the money.
Definitely worth the money. It has been well worth the price, it has more than paid for itself the number of times I've had to use it so far.

I am looking to trade my 1995 RXL for a 1997-2000 ski-doo Formula 500 with a blown motor or not running. Just so you all know we think we got my problem fixed. thinking it is the voltage regulator not charging the battery enough. [email protected] email if anyone has one and wants to trade.

Well thats good that you think you got it figured out. Why you looking to trade, if you don't mind me asking. Mine has been so much fun since I picked it up a few weeks ago!

Because I can't afford the gas. it loves it. and its not good for off trail riding. i like it on hard packed trails but not of trail
