Hello, new to forum and I just bought my first sled and would like to get it ship shape. Anyway its the 600 twin LE and has 2500mi on it and seems in good condition. The rear end is soft and seems to have lost its rebound. Do I just need to replace the rear shock and wondering where to get parts and what this all entails. I weigh 240, more in winter ;) and would like a stiffer / higher ride if possible.

Hay Days is THIS weekend!

What I would do is drop the skid and pull the shocks and springs.
Then go to as many swap meets as you can find!
I would find a fox shock that is rebuildable and heavier springs!

Ugh Hay Days...A place where the credit cards and the checking account end up taking a hit,lol.

But KC is right get a Fox Shock for the Rear Rear shock and the Front Rear shock on the suspension. You can also use Polaris Fox Shocks on the Rear Rear as they were using the same shocks between the two sleds. Just have to make sure the lengths are correct and the right bushings are in there. Last Fox Shock I bought for my old '93 440 was a Fox Shock from a Arctic Cat.

I don't understand why the rear end won't rebound after just 2500mi. I can see the shock itself loose gas and go bad but shouldn't the coil spring then be stronger? The coil can't be bad can it? I"m not sure how to buy the replacement either, I've looked on mfgsupply for example and they have the shock for sale w/o the coil but don't want to re-use it if its soft, if anything I'd like a heavier one but not sure how to find one?
If I look for fox shocks will any snowmobile shock the correct length work? I"ve read that the extended length should be 14.5"

There is 2 shocks on the rear suspension. They call them Front Rear and Rear Rear.

On that V-Max both the Front Rear and Rear Rear have coil springs on them. If it was me I would just replace the Rear Rear shock with that Kimpex if you can't find a similar one from Fox. As sadly that shock with coil spring is NLA from Yamaha as it had 4 or 5 part numbers and it doesn't look like the spring was sold separately from the shock at least per this parts diagram below. Maybe take one of the part numbers for it and call Yamaha, order the Kimpex shock for 63 dollars on Ebay or Amazon and either re-use the old spring or possibly a new spring from Yamaha if they have available still.

On all my Polaris on the Front Rear they have a similar setup with the Front Rear having a coil spring on it and I have never replaced that spring unless it was broken.

Also don't be afraid of the part numbers being different from MFGSupply. The N7 stands for nitro and most likely if you were to order it from MFGSupply it would be the same shock. I have used those Kimpex Nitro Shocks before as well and they hold up really well. And they come with new collars for the spring which is nice.

Also I have ordered from Motorheadzone at least 10 times with good products every time.

so as long as the coil is the correct length I should be good - right? KC, any reason you say from a 95 Cat? Are most coil spring "ends" pretty much the same diameter to fit in the holders? My spring seems to be close to the same diameter on both ends

Well the pre 97 Cat Fox shocks were about the same 14" of your shock and the coils are larger in diam!
The difference is yours is Metric and Fox are SAE.
You will need different bolts and or spacers.
I make mine out of 3/8" galv pipe * Im a Plumber and have a pipe threader and a caliper)

Babbits is the same as the one I posted above.

The Front Coil shocks on a Polaris I know don't come close to 14" they are all 8" to 10" with the spring/shocks put together.

The difference is KC knows Cats inside and out, I don't. My mainstay is Polaris. And he is right the bolts/spacers will be different. He also has tools & a garage I wish I had at my disposal,lol. I did while the old man worked at Mobil Oil but those days are long gone.

I would still consider asking Yamaha if the coil spring can be bought separately just for the hell of it. Doesn't hurt to find out as they have to have some sort of solution and a possible backup if you can't find a Arctic Cat shock that will work.

Local Salvage Yards are going to be your best bet for what you are looking for unless of course you can make it to Hays Days by tomorrow.

I pulled the old shock from my 91 SRV skid and measured it, then looked at my 95 ZRT Front END shocks as they are about the same!
I put that skid reworked with a few parts from a Cat and a Cat shock and put it under my 89 Ovation

thanks guys, I'm gonna call a couple dealers and take the skid out. I didn't ask this but there isn't a simple solution of adjustment it there? I still don't know how a coil can weaken at 2500mi. I'm assuming there is a tool to adjust the nut on the shock while its in the sled? Sorry if this seems dumb but the last sled I worked on was an '80 Jag which had adjustment blocks on each side of the tunnel

HI KCCats2, so i can put a 94-96 Cat ZR or EXT front spring on there? That would be great because those I can easily find on line
