I just purchased a 1985 Polaris Indy Trail 440 for $400 in the original maroon color with original seat, has about 5600 miles on it, pretty clean, seems to run good, starts and idles fine. Can anyone tell me a little about these sleds, how reliable they are, average top speed, things like that? I couldn't find much online about it. Also the only way to shut the sled off is by hitting the kill switch, the key won't shut it off, is that common with these?

Post up a pic of your key switch & engine compartment as KC said. Those switches are a dime a dozen and can be had easily and for cheap. If it had electric start at any one point they could have just unplugged it if they unplugged the switch. Those older sleds from that era from Polaris you could unplug the key switch and start the sled as long as the kill switch was in the running position.

If you have a problem with theft in your area, wiring a hidden switch can help thwart the opportunistic thief.
