Sled ran fine and now went to take it out and it has a high idle around 3000 rpm and we discovered a very small leak of coolant bottom side of the front of the cylinders... plugs werent wet and no signs of coolant on them.. help!! gaskets maybe? If so where is the drain plug to drain the coolant and what all needs to be taken apart to get to the gaskets... Or maybe we are way off on thinking its a gasket??? thanks in advance..

sounds like a plugged jet to me. if u flip choke
on while it at 3000rpm, does the idle drop to normal??
id clean the carbs then check coolant leak.

also check for a cracked carb boot your sled is prone to this problem and the idle picking up like that is a symptom.

It has V force reed ... Still prone to crack?

get some carb cleaner when the sleds running, spray the boots, around the clutch and cylinder bases if the idle goes up more, then it's a air leak around where you where spraing at the time

Boots are not cracked.. going to clean carbs out and check to see if a jet is plugged.. If not plugged will be back for more...

Alright so went home at lunch and fired up... idling around 2000 today.. but close the choke half way and it idles down... clogged jet most likely?.. also noticed a small squeek noise coming around where the crank shaft seal is??? (not sure id that is what its called).. should that be spinning when sled is not moving?

Try backin the idle mixture screws out 1/4-1/2 turn each, those carbs are hard to get to idle at a consistant speed. Summits idle ok in the parking lot but slow way down at high altitude, cold temps will also change rpm as well.

Ok, I went thru both carbs, they were pretty clean but I hit 'em with some carb cleaner anyway. Put it back together, same prob. Start it up and it slowly climbs to 2500, throw the choke on it almost dies, turn the choke off it idles up to 1600 then creeps up to 2500. Also it looks like there's a seal popped out pushing against the clutch on the crank, is this possible? This is wiatto's "mechanic" btw

Could the DPM have anything to do with this? Pulled the plugs last night and they are not dry or white.. the carbs were almost spotless.. we are starting to run out of ideas.. help would be appreciated

Ok, so I checked the airtemp RTD on the airbox and its reading open, anyone know much about this DPM system? Could this be the source of a high idle?

I just checked a air temp sensor at room temp it is 2.415 K ohms, as it gets colder the resistance should increase get higher. If yours reads open ( real high res ) the system should be running rich as if temp was -20.
I will disconect the air temp sensor on a rebuilt engine for the first 50 miles to keep things well lubed.
The idle is to high or idle mixture to lean. Sounds like you have othe issues as well, outer crank seal shouldn't change idle speed as there is another seal behind outer crank brg.

So I feel kinda dumb now, didn't realize my expensive Fluke t5-600 multimeter only goes to 1K ohms... so I used a cheapo and its reading 2.25K ohms which seems good. Going to try adjusting the isle screw as Dave suggested and drive it a little to see whathow it goes. Thanx for all your help!

do yourself a favor and check for air leak on the crank seal if the outer seals shot the other could be starting to fail, more likely a seal dryd up over summer then the carbs getting out ofwack from sitting there

So we backed the idle screw down a half turn and it seemed to be a little bit more at a normal idle.. couple of things arose from doing this. Would this just mask a more serious issue? Also it was between 5-15 degress ferenheit the last couple of nights.. so maybe just cold from sitting for a couple of weeks have a higher idle RPM? We rode about 10 miles and checked the plugs 2 different times and they were not dry or white which would lead to running lean I believe? As well when sitting out on the trail it idled up around 3000 rpm.. If I switched the choke half way the idle would come down to normal (checked the jets and they seemed to be clear) Not really sure what is going on at this point.. performance seemed to be normal last night.. just dont want to lead to more problems down the road.. Running out of ideas here..

I kind of have the same problem with my 03 Legend 600 but it is when I come off the throttle it wants to stay up around 3000 rpms. I brought it into the shop put it up on a stand and noticed if I kept a finger on the throttle linkage between the carbs and hit the throttle it seamed to be sticking a lil. just a light touch pushing the linkage down brought the rpms down. I have yet had the time to tear into things to find out whats sticking, but its a idea for you to check out..

Did you find out what your problem was? I just bought a 2003 mxz 600ho and noticed also that it idles really high, around 3000 RPM. Once I flick the choke on half for a few seconds and flick it back it will idle down to around 2000. Thats all I have been doing to get it to idle down but I would like to remedy the problem as well. Does putting the ckoke on half for a few seconds hurt anything? I doubt it but just thought I'd ask. plz let me know if you have fixed your problem because it is the exact same one that I have...

hanging idles of any kind need to investigated. In some cases, you will find an air leak, dirty carb, leaking seals, ect. By flipping the choke to bring the idle down you're not correcting the root cause. A malfunction as mentioned above can lead to a lean condition and damage the engine.

If you have a seal pushed out, you need to address that before you even think of riding the sled. A seal is cheap, the alternative isn't.
