I have a 2000 sx700r that has lost about ten miles an hour on top end and is going through oil like crazy. any ideas? the sled has 7500 miles on it and it still runs and starts great

when the pump fails it goes into a wide open oil mode for engine protection.

first rule out that the pump cable is not pulled apart at the adjuster nut and the freeplay is set to spec on that cable.

i am unaware of any methods for testing.

if the cable is adjusted properly and not hanging up, and there are no visible signs of leakage from the lines, pump, blled screw, or tank, most likely the pump is bad.

has there been any work recently done to the sled? some if not all models had a check valve in the line from pump to the crankcase. perhaps the line was installed backwards?

over oiling could also be part of the equation in your loss of performance on top end.
