  1. Polaris Starter rebuild parts

    Polaris Snowmobiles
Thanks a lot, the correct part number really helps! Looks like I can purchase a rebuilt one for about $120....I would rather just replace the drive gear, but I am unable to find the correct rebuild kit. But the starter is old and the brushes are about half gone so might be smart to just bite the...

  3. Polaris Starter rebuild parts

    Polaris Snowmobiles
I have a 1995 Polaris 580 triple touring sled and the starter works good and the brushes are about at 50% wear, but the gear is worn so that the starter kicks in and out. I ordered what I thought was the correct rebuild kit off Ebay but the gear was smaller and the shaft size was also too small...
  4. 1995 Classic touring triple

    Polaris Snowmobiles
I have a bad gear on the original starter that has maybe 50% of the brush life remaining. I ordered a gear kit off Ebay but was sent the incorrect part and the company said they don't carry the older gear kit which is larger than the newer one. Anyone know where to get the proper gear and if not...

Soon you will be looking for #5 , lol.
  7. Enticer steering and suspension

    Yamaha Snowmobiles
So inherited my Dad's old 1978 Yamaha Enticer 340, I finally have it running well, adjusted the brakes, cleaned the carb, got the choke working, changed chaincase oil, replaced the belt, etc. I realize that in 1978 snowmobile suspension and steering were still pretty primitive, but I am...
  8. XLT Indy 500 idle too high

    Polaris Snowmobiles
Ok, ordered the 3 needles and seats from e-bay for 30 bucks, drained all the fuel out of the crankcase, put her back together and she fired right up and seems to be running fine. I am so happy to finally have all 3 of my old sleds running well and starting easily!!!! I am going to try to...

I agree. I have simple needs and don't want to go into debt just to ride a snowmobile or impress people. It gives me great pleasure to have my Dad's (RIP) old '78 Yamaha Enticer running well again. He bought it at a Forest Service auction here in Priest Lake Idaho in the late 90's for $150 and...
  10. Someone should have warned me!

    General Sled Chat
I only have 3 (so far)...I was tempted to buy at least one more so I could have at least 2 running at one time. However, I have become a bit better at working on them, so I am glad I stopped at 3, I have 2 running perfectly now and the 3rd one is very close. Now for some nice, deep powder next...
  11. HELP :O 98 Powder Special bogging out and I cant figure out why!

    Arctic Cat Snowmobiles
Sounds pretty much what my '98 ZL500 was doing. I thought it was the TSS, unplugged that and it still happened. Then I thought it was the stator, but it was an intermittent problem so I pretty much ruled that out. So I was reading up on 2 stroke engines and how to read spark plugs and from what...
  12. 1999 Classic Touring 500 Bogs at WOT

    Polaris Snowmobiles
For a richer mixture you turn it in, out for lean, which adds more air to the fuel. Mine was missing at high rpm and sometimes backfiring and refusing to accelerate unless I let it idle for a minute, Since I turned the mixture screw in a half turn, it is running perfectly. As for the needle...

    Polaris Snowmobiles
My 'Cat was doing that along with other symptoms. I finally figured out from research and reading the plugs that it was running lean. I turned the mixture screws in 1/2 a turn and after 2 weeks of riding, it's running perfectly. It seems that many times, we over-analyze things when it turns out...
  14. XLT Indy 500 idle too high

    Polaris Snowmobiles
Ok now I don't know which needle and seat to order...this one is a great deal for 10 bucks... Mikuni Needle Seat: Parts & Accessories | eBay ...the same one on the Dennis Kirk website is about 17, but it says on their page that it's not the correct part. It looks like the same one and is for a...
  15. XLT Indy 500 idle too high

    Polaris Snowmobiles
Still no fuel leaking from the impulse line, so I don't think theirs a problem with the pump. After further review, using a magnifying glass, I noticed some grooves and discoloration on the needle tip. After 2800 miles and 28 years, it won't hurt to replace them.
  16. XLT Indy 500 idle too high

    Polaris Snowmobiles
Ok I disconnected the impulse line, it did not contain any residual fuel and none is running out so far after an hour, I will continue to monitor it. This is getting frustrating since the needle and seats are clean and don't appear to be worn at all and I don't have the tool to pressure test...

Ok thanks. I will check the float level.
  18. Please help with basic throttle thumb fatigue

    Ski-Doo Snowmobiles
Sometimes on long rides and while on flat, straight, easy terrain I will use the palm of my hand to give my thumb a break. I wonder if they make a throttle lock-cruise device for snowmobiles? I had one on an 84 Honda Magna street bike. I suppose it would be too dangerous to use on a snowmobile?
  19. 1998 ZL500 power loss-missing

    Arctic Cat Snowmobiles
Well, I finally gave up on trying to pull the flywheel and put it all back together and see how it would run. I ran it with the plug for all the lights, ignition, etc. disconnected. It ran ok but had a bit of misfiring going on and would sometimes backfire and not accelerate but still idled...
  20. XLT Indy 500 idle too high

    Polaris Snowmobiles
Ok, finally figured out that it was badly flooded. I pulled the 3 drain plugs on the bottom of the motor below the exhaust manifold and at least 1-2 oz's of fuel came out of each cylinder. So since they are prone to fail and the carbs are stock 34mm Mikuni's, I am going to assume that I need to...
