Indy 650 carb help.

Hi all,
I recently got a 1992 Indy 650 carbed.
Im taking everything apart to inspect and clean before the winter.

I took apart all three carbs and all three are running 280 mains and 45 pilots. This seems a little rich in the mains.
Does anyone have a suggestion on carb jetting?

Would all three have the same jetting or the middle or clutch side carb be richer?

What would be the best primary and secondary clutch setup for trail riding?

The average temp in my area in the winter is in between -15 to -5 Celsius.
I'm under 1000 feet above sea level in my area.

How much piston wash do you have?

First off where exactly are you located.

2nd when I had a 650 I went one up from stock on the primary, also the stock red secondary springs from polaris are junk. If it has a gold or secondary already then leave it be and rebuild it with new buttons along with cleaning it up.

Call your Polaris parts dealer and tell them you what you have and that you want a one up from stock primary spring. Also I would make sure that the primary clutch does not need to be rebuilt because after so many miles they need it and if it does need rebuilding then you need to have it balanced.

The plugs were almost black. Cylinders look fine.
I found out the mains are supposed to be 260's.

I'm located near Peterborough Ontario.
I took the secondary apart today and it has a purple spring. I cleaned it all up and reassembled it. I think I'm going to order a trail clutch kit from EPI.

I used a trail clutch kit from EPI on my 1990 Indy 650 back in the day, it worked very well.



Polaris jetting charts are notoriously rich, jet to their chart and check the color after you ride. If the color is way black, you can probably jet one jet size smaller and still be safe.

Big thing with Polaris Secondaries is the helix. They are junk from factory imho, I run EPI QA-2's and QA-3's depending on the size of the engine then use springs from whoever has the ideal lb ratings I like. Right now I just took out the EPI Black spring and put in a SLP 40-66 in mine, went from 125-280 to 120-300 to see if it will make a difference in the way I like & ride. For my secondary I use a Black/Gold secondary.

For yours the Polaris Purple is a good secondary spring as that is what I ran on my 88 650. You will probably like the EPI springs, some do some don't. My sleds all have a mixed bag of different makers. But it has taken me years to set things up the way I like and ride.

Good luck with it, those 650's are notoriously fast and light. Also Dan is right Polaris was also known for over jetting from factory. You could go down one or even half a size (those are only made by aftermarket companies FYI the .5 sizes) and off of eBay usually.

If it was me and I was going all out, I would pull that primary, rebuild it and balance it with the new kit and maybe even put in new weights as well.

Thanks for all the info! Super helpful. I'll be taking the primary off, disassembling it and cleaning/inspecting it. I will see how it runs the way it is but will most likely order the So I kit.
I will also drop from 280 down to 260 and go from there.

All of my Carb sleds have a jet kit in the trunk, I have been known to swap jets in the middle of a ride!

What I am saying is get 3 270's and 3 260's and even 3 250's so you can adjust to perfection!

And since you have 45 pilots you might want to get a set of 40's and even 35's

If you end up rebuilding it you have to have it balanced, just remember that. It usually costs around 50-80 bucks to have a clutch balanced at least it did last time I had one done.

And you can go 265 for jets, as I said I did half a jet size on a couple of sleds I had as dropping a full jet size was too much but yet going back up was too rich and those .5 jet sizes worked for me.
