Yamaha Exciter 440 won't start
hi, I have an old yamaha exciter that has been sitting in my yard for over 2 years without being started. The other day i tried to start it but she would not fire up. I tried spraying starting fluid in the air intake but it still would not start. I would love to get this sled up and running again, Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Yamaha Exciter 440 won't start
Does it have compression and spark?

First off you will want to get as much of the old gas out of the tank and start with fresh, then pull the plugs and check for spark. If there is spark, hit the plug holes with a squirt of premix gas or a hit of starting fluid. Put the plugs back in, torque them down and give it a couple of pulls. If she fires, you know that she is a runner. From there you will more than likely have to remove the carbs and clean all passages real good.

I have an 86 440 that had the same problem. I changed the plugs etc but before I went to all the trouble of draining the gas (which you do need to do) I disconnected the fuel line between the carb and fuel pump and put a funnel on the line with fresh gas and pulled a few times and it started (after sitting for ten years without cleaning the carb) Alot of times the vaccum line will crack/break from old age and the fuel pump cant prime itself. If you do this you will at least know if it will run etc. Then you can take everything else apart, clean and reassamble knowing it will run.

I took the spark plugs out, cleaned them up a bit, put some starting fluid in, and put the plugs back in. Then when I pulled the rope it fired up for a few seconds. I tried putting some gas strait into the carb, and it fired up and ran for a few minutes, so it will definitely run. I kept putting gas into the carb, but it seemed to only burn the gas I put in and didn't seem like gas was reaching the carb from the gas tank. I could see gas trying to make its way up the fuel line between the fuel pump and the carb, so i think the carb might be clogged where the gas comes in. I am hoping that when i get the carb clean it will run good.

It's either that or the fuel pump is weak.

Check all of the lines for breaks and such. Pay particular attention to the pickup in the tank, although you will need to remove the gas tank cover and the fitting that all of the lines fit into on the top of the tank. Also, make sure the fuel filter on the end of the pick up is in good condition.
Check to make sure the pulse line to the crankcase is attached and in good condition.
If all else fails, it is possible that the diaphragms in the fuel pump atrophied while the sled was sitting, and don't pump fuel properly.
