Still working on 89 phazer

Well ive had yamahadad help me with carbs and such and went and borrowed a compression tester. Im getting 100 on left and 92 on right.. This has been rebuilt new pistons rings gaskets seals and bearings.. Could this be the problem im having with it wanting to bog when push the throttle and goes like a raped ape when choke is half then off.. Seems to me the left cylinder clutch side is running hotter then the right..

Do you know when it was rebuilt? Those numbers look like it's ready for a rebuild.....

Was rebuilt in the spring of 2012. Ive been threw the fuel filter. Fuel pump replaced a coil on it. Torn apart the carbs so many times I can do it in my sleep now. Just frustrates me so going to put on back burner for awhile and maybe something will come to me in my sleep or a idea

I've been there done that to. It can be really frustrating. You mentioned you replaced coil. Which one? External or internal? I am having same issues with my Phazer(s). I was looking in the wrong place the hole time. Come to find out the external coils that the plug wires come off of were junk. The sled would fire up and idle perfect or back and forth between one and two cylinders then finally nothing. I was choking the crap out of it, which seemed to help until finally wouldn't start. I pulled them and checked with meter and no reading or low reading. So just a thought check and see what reading you get with OHM meter on the external. Red tip goes to cap ends and black tip goes to orange wire coming off bottum.

sure they put the rings in correctly? Thats low compression for a new rebuild.

I agree with Phaze those numbers are low. Check the tourque on the heads to make sure there tight. Were new parts used when it was rebuilt?

did you have a chance to get a bit of break in on the rings? a few heat cycles? could be the end gap wasnt properly set on the rings or tolerances werent measured on the cylinders.

oem parts or aftermarkets? either way something is amiss with the top end if your comp tester is reliable along with the test procedure.

being that the pto side is further away from the fan, temps are usually higher on that side. but i have had phazers around here than ran fine at around 95 psi using my comp tester.

although you have been through the carbs, do all the circuits enter and exit using spray or air? i see it alot where someone thinks they have been all the way through, but actually missed a circuit.

next is the choke cable adjustments. thats a two into one cable, and its not uncommon for one side or the other to stretch or be mis adjusted.

Yeah Yama ive used spray and air only problem is those holes you were trying to find out where they went. new stuff put into rebuild. Im thinking oem but I could be wrong. Ill recheck the choke cables as it ran good before a piston melted down and had to be rebuilt..Ive yanked it outside for now and enjoying riding my 1000 for now..Ill battle the phazer sooner or later again..Thanks for everybodies input..

Re: Still working on 89 phazer

I was told by a snowmobile mechanic once that you need to soak the carbs in ammonia overnight to really get the passages clean. I agree with others that the compression is too low
