2001 sxr 600 darting problem
Hello All, first of all thanks for all your tips on threads before i am finally on the trails this year and loving it! one thing i noticed yesterday though is the sled is darting a bit and not sure why. i have also noticed that the front suspension is very stiff could this be the problem, also very hard to steer on pavement maybe becasue of the weight transfer or to much pressure on skis?
also have noticed my tie rod ends have some play in them, i can move the handlebars a bit of play before the skis start actually turning. it doesnt look right but in a way makes sence because of the little ball joint coupling to the ski would have some play before actually turning skis? do i need to adjust these to be more tight? i dont want to screw around with it because could this possibly screw up alignment?

lots of variables can contribute to that equation and alignment is one of them. your assuming the alignment is correct, but have you checked it?
too much ski pressure from the ski shock adjustment, skid shocks, limiter straps, etc can all have an impact as can camber adjustments and your transfer rods down to shock condition. 10+ year old sled with rebuildable shocks haveing ever been serviced?
how about the carbides? whens the last time you looked at the bottom of the skis? too much carbide can contribute as well.
have you changed anything lately? play in the heim joints can factor in, but from what i have seen those last along time unless yours have been neglected. i would narrow down the simple stuff first and worry about the heims last.

Thanks yamadad, first things first over the weekend ran into a major problem. Wile I was on the trail we got off a bit due to poor conditions and ended up between train tracks , my sleds front left ski got jammed straight and sled turned 180....ski has huge chunk out and ski column totally bent and trailing arm also bent. So now I have to get a new trailing arm new ski column and skis. I've heard alot about these c&a skis but how well do they perform more than ats pro skis with dual carbides ? Once all is fixed and back together I will see how te darting is. One thing though is the limiter strap how exactly do I adjust this ? And where is it located ? Also does anyone know if the ride height on this sled is adjustable ? Would like to sit higher than it is now. Along with the darting this thing fishtails alot , again thinking to much ski pressure ?

skis are tough to recommend as they seem to suit individuals and sleds uniquely. some say "use this ski, its the greatest", but that seems to differ on adjustments and rider. to me its like shoes, some fit, some dont.
as for your limiter straps, theres two up there in the front of your skid. atop your front pivot arm you will see 2 eye bolts with 10mm nuts on the threaded portion and straps on the eye portion. more threads showing, the tighter the straps and obviously the opposite is true. there is a min and max for thread length but the less amount of thread showing, the less the ski pressure.
as mentioned, there are alot of variables in the suspension equation. at one time i posted a link to the suspension tuning video from yamaha. it should be in the how to section link at the top of the yamaha section. it may help you alot.
as for the ride height, your sxr should already have a good stance above the snow. may be a matter of suspension adjustment or your shocks may need attention.

i would shoot for a neutral position as a base line. see how many threads are showing on the adjuster and split the difference.
there should be a minimum and maximum thread length for your sled. off the top of my head, 10mm showing is minimum, cant recall the max. probably somewhere between 25 and 30mm.
