98 Yamaha 700 venture won't idle with choke closed

Runs great with choke closed but when it comes to a idle it bogs out, unless I open choke. So I pulled the carbs and cleaned two out of three, the third one had a strip screw on the bowl. I also changed the spark plugs. But it still bogs out at an idle. Any help would be great.

check out the thread titled "clogged carb or low idle". you have the same thing going on.

as for those pesky bowl screws, try pinching with some vise grips or filing a slot to fit a standard screwdriver. sometimes a light hammer tap on the screwdriver sets them free.

all it takes is one plugged jet to upset the running quality. apparently in your case its the one that didnt get cleaned. when its all said and done, replace the existing bowl screws with allen head bolts. m4's about 12mm long, cant recall the pitch. take an old one with to match up.

Thanks for the reply. I pulled the carbs out and cleaned all three. I reinstalled them and it started with a back fire and know it runs at 2000 RPMS and it smokes and bogs out with increase of throttle. Not sure what happened. So I pulled them back out. On two of the carbs The plastic washer on the main needle are a little loose. And Everything else looks good.

it shouldnt affect anything if those are loose, the bowl holds them in place. you very well could have missed something in your cleaning or knocked some debris back in. sometimes it takes a few tries to rid all three carbs of the gunk thats in there.

Is it safe to use a fuel additive?

certain additives are safe to use but none are a replacement for physically cleaning the carbs. in other words, your not going to pour anything into that fuel tank thats going to eliminate your problem, but there are things you can pour in there to reduce the occurrence from happening.
