2002 Venture 600, Top end rebuild?
Hi,
I am very seriously looking at buying an 02 600 Venture. Sled is in excellent condition. It has 4800 miles.
Generally speaking, what is the mileage point where I would see a need to rebuild the top end?
I am going to request the dealer do a compression test when I go back to see the sled in a few days. We have agreed on a price and I am ready to pull the trigger. It ran very well, started easily and ran great, when I saw it the other day.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chuck

yamaha has always recommended the 3-3500 mark for a re-ring but if you have done your research, you will see that most will far exceed the 7000 mark and still look new inside.
your on the right track with the comp test, but thats only an indication. i wouldnt think twice about any yamaha 2 stroke with that mileage, but keep in the back of your mind a refresh.
personally i would prefer to be there while the test is done unless you have a well established relationship with the dealer, but thats just me. if hes offering a warranty(unlikely)you could rest a bit easier but typically on used equipment its "as is", buyer assumes the risk.

doo the compression test while you are
there. or do it urself. the dealer can tell
you anything and u'll never know.
once parts arrive it doesnt take more
than 4hrs to do top end if its your first time.

Guys,
Thanks for the replies and information. I did finalize the deal today and I am picking up the sled this Saturday.
I will try and get some pics posted.
Good luck and God bless to all of those effected by Sandy.

The pistons are only $55 and gasket set is $75, plus tax and shippping!
Better than adding another $200 to replate a cyl! Or 3!

Pulled the trigger, she's home.
Well guys, thanks for all of the advice. I picked up the sled today. The dealer was really busy, his mechanic was running around like a nut, as they delivered two travel trailers while I was there. The sled fired up and ran great. I did not have the nerve to ask them to do a compression test, they would not have had time to anyway. Based on all of the positive feedback on these sleds and my own great experience with my last sled, 78 SRX 440, I just brought it home.
She's resting in the garage, under a blanket, waiting for the white stuff.

I still wouldn't have left the dealership w/o a compression test. That's moot now. As KC mentioned, you still need to do one whether you do it yourself, or, you have a bud do it. You need to know what those numbers are so you can rebuild it now before you get stranded, or, at least find out if you're in good shape for piece of mine. With those miles, you're approaching the rebuild area...JMO
