Checking Reeds
I'm hoping to be pulling my carbs off my 01 sxr 600 sometime within the next few weeks when I find time to leave campus. I figured since I'm there I should check our my Reeds. So what am I looking for?

i check reed valves by removing carbs
then removing plugs. light up a smoke
and blow smoke in plug hole. if it comes
out the reeds they need replacement.
learned this from a skidoo tech that
i hang around with. sounds weird, but works!!

Hmm.. does that mean all ski doo guys smoke??
Only way I smoke is if someone sets me on fire
Good tip, though. Does piston location make a difference? I can't imagine too much smoke getting in with the piston at TDC...

lol thats because Arctic Cats smoke enough that their riders dont have to light up, and polaris riders are just too sensible.

Thanks guys! I'll have to try that when I get home. Is there anything else I should check as long as I'm in the area?

interesting trick, may have to try that. if you dont inhale your not really smoking, right?
i usually just check to make sure they are sealing flat at the tips, look for chips or crack or any other deformities.
from here on out i am going to smoke my reeds.

I think I could become a reed dealer then. Distributing high quality reeds to all the reed smokers. How could we relate this to Cheech and Chong?
