SRV reverse

I would like to convert my 82 SRV to have reverse. What ideas are out there as to which Yamaha model(s) would have interchangeable parts? I think the VK540 was one of the earliest Yammys to have reverse. What is the center distance, on the VK, from the top gear to the bottom gear and is it the same as the SRV?
Thanks in advance for any help.

your on the right track with the donor sled, but you may need to make some modifications.

its not impossible, you could be the first. all you need is a few measures, i dont have them. besides the chain case mounting points and the jackshaft to drive shaft center to center, you next concern would be the jackshaft itself.

sounds like a fun project. do your homework and share your findings.

yamadad4 - Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I'm watching for a local VK540 being sold for parts. Other than that it would be too pricey to consider it any further. I can just buy a sled that already has reverse and it would be less expensive and the work would already be done.
Thanks again.

I don't know if this helps but i took the jack shaft, drive shaft, and the chain case off a 93 Exciter II and installed them on an 84 SRV.With no problems. But like Yamadad says the jack shaft is the part that has to go with the chain case as the splines were different, the drive shaft was the same spline and bearing size witch is good as it will give you the extra out bored drivers.

I did this as i took the extended Exciter skid and 1" track and installed then on the SRV making it into a 133" sled and the tunnel extension also bolted right on.
