And, there's always that "runaway" engine thing that can happen too!

It revs up then pops and shuts off
Local mechanic thinks it must be the stator so I pulled it apart
Stator looks clean but the magnets in the "converter" have a light surface rust to it
I guess it's time to research ohm readings for it and see if it's my problem

I think I meant flywheel not converter
I'd love to put a different flywheel and put electric start on it

Clean the rust off and try it again.
200 grit sand paper.
Any rust will decrease the output of the stator.

could go either way between fuel or electrical with the pop and die, your on your way for ruling out electrical. cleaning the mag is a step in the right direction. if you cant find the output specs for the ignition i will dig out my book.

If you could that would be great! Take your time of course.
Also when cleaning the magnets how much material should I take off safely and how can I clean off the shavings off the magnets afterwards?

brown - black = 590 ohms
black - white/red = 15.1 ohms.

i wouldnt remove any material from the magnets, its a balance thing. lightly scuff with a scotchbrite and spray down with brake clean or electrical contact cleaner, followed by compressed air.

Ok back at it. Lets see if I can enjoy them this year.
Stator checked out to be good within 10% at about 8 below.
Flywheel magnets were cleaned and sled back together.
Still no change. It does rev up fine when track is in the air.

I'm back to fuel delivery. It idles fine but backfires when u give it gas picks up speed/rpm a little sluggish but will then rev up to about 6500 and back off and constantly stay at a lower rpm with irregularities in the running.
I did notice in the fuel filter I have between the pump and cArb it fills up when it is sitting idling but after it revs up it looks empty as well as when u stop the sled.
It backfires through the pulse line going to the pump when you get on the gas from idle on both sleds but on the more severe one it will backfire while it is driving too enough to blow the exhaust up.(was welded to fix it)
I wonder if they have the right fuel pumps on them because it seems to be fuel delivery and both are doing the same thing after the owner let them sit for a few years.
I wonder if when he went to get them running again got fuel pumps for both that were wrong.

Or, the pumps just need a rebuild as they can not keep up with demand due to micro holes in the diaphragms.

I've already rebuilt them x_x
Everything fuel wise minus carb has been replaced.
Coil, plugs, stator checked, flywheel
I can't remember what else.

Gosh after reading this thread I have a similar issue. Look at the thread labeled "the time has come" the last couple posts I have. I am thinking that I have a clutching issue.

I can take off great but if I back off the throttle and try to gain RPM it seems stuck in a higher gear and I can't gain RPM.

I think we have issues that are a little different.
Do you have lean backfiring through the pulse line?
Also it is both sleds and I can drive them at like 30-35 at ~4.5k-5k rpm constantly but with irregular sounds.
When cold they will not accept throttle rather just backfire out the pulse line and sput out the muffler.

Quick update. Tore apart the clutches and cleaned them up and adjusted the secondary to 4 from 3. Not sure if I spun the spring enough before putting them together on the splines.
Also went from the aftermarket belt to the old backup original which seems to be smaller. Also cleaned the carb yet again and opened up the mainjet a bit with a welding tip file that was a hair bigger then the size of each passage. Also readjusted the choke and polished the plunger. Readjusted the idle to about 2.5 turns and it seems to be a ton better.
It still will sputter a bit when constantly at 5k but on the packed snow it will zing up to ~6500 about 45-50 mph but not much more.
I'm gonna get a new belt and go from there not sure what length to get though because there is a few different available.
I think it was a combination of the choke not being seated all the way, main jet needed another freshening up and cleaning each passage, and the clutch needed a polishing and or belt too long.
