I have a 1984 Yamaha SRV. It was running great until just lately

when suddenly the power dropped off-we're talking only about

30 mph at full throttle-. Finally it died and I haven't been able to

get it started again. It just backfires like you wouldn't believe. I

know I am getting fuel into the carb but when it was running it

sounded like one cylinder was missing sometimes. Does anyone

have ideas on how to fix this problem? What might be wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated so I can get back out into

the powder! Thanx.

sounds like fuel line leakage or bad plug or wire. Could be alot of things. Where in wisconsin can we get back into the powder?
It was like 50 here all last week.
I hope you didn't burn out a piston.

Change the plugs, and do a compression test on it. If they are both OK, it may be dirty carbs causing overfueling.

I replaced the plugs and did the compression test. I got about

60 per piston on that. It still doesn't start with the new plugs.

Could the timing or points be off?

Oh, and I completely cleaned the carb out, top to bottom. I had

this problem once before and the carb was iced up but it's not

this time. About the powder, You have to go up north for the

powder. Last week it made it just about to 60degrees here :-(

melted all the snow here for me. We have about 1 1/2 inches on

the ground right now. Grrrrrrrr

no snow here.either.
no points on your sled. It has CDI and I doubt the timing is off unless someone just messed with it and didn't tighten the screws properly.

Sixty pounds per side is WAY low. Try another tester to make sure yours wasn't bad. Compression should be 120.

Well, I think I found the problem! I pulled both jugs off last night and was unpleasently surprised with two pistons that where in very bad shape. Both of them only had one ring left on them and were completely pitted and had chunks of metal missing off of them! I'm ordering new pistons for it now, hopefully that should help! Thanks for your ideas and suggestions. I'll let you know when I get it running.

Make sure to service the cylinders well while it's apart. Any imperfection will trash all your hard work....
