NICE ...... I have an '80, original owner under ideal conditions I can do about 90 mph/6500rpms .......... 6000 kms never done anything to it except suspension springs, sliders and belts!! Had to recover seat a few yrs ago and replace the wood base ........ lov it and won't replace, suggest running a little extra oil in gas tank injection works fine but at that age I am just using a little insurance

Enjoy

for the era, that sled was the stuff. pros and cons would be debatable depending on what you are comparing to.

in this day, the only con that comes to mind is parts availability.

an easy upgrade for that sled is the addition of spme plastic ski skins. you wont find any direct bolt ons, but the oem style from 97 sled are easily adaptable.

is that an elsinore in the background?

its a bit difficult to place a value on that sled.

from a vintage or collector standpoint, the number would be up there. you may research that at some of the vintage sled sites.

unfortunately, to those who cant appreciate a quality sled like yours, in their eyes its just a 30 something year old sled and worth little or nothing. or they will try using sleds that arent near as pristine for comparables in a price beat down.

Keep it.

Price is in the $1000-$2000, they are a RARE year. A much more common 1980 has gone for $1200, mint with 300Mi. How many miles does yours have?

Speed is around 80-90MPH at 6500RPM-7500RPM. depending on tuning and rider weight. It can pop trackies too. The suspension isn't that bad, if it has good shocks. Very fun, reliable. My main sled is a 1979 Exciter, and I will go on 50mi trips. BE WARNED: as with any fan-cooled sled, don't push in temps above 10*F. Going WOT in 20*F for 5min gave me a flashed piston. Hope you like her, I wouldn't sell! Here are pics of what I do on them. Also, look at my sig pic.

PM me if you need any questions. (You shouldn't). I have been in and out of these, doing suspensions, engines, and I completely parted out another one. If you need parts Dennis & Kirk has many, and Yamaha (HIGH price though).

Polish: I'd say a good polish and a buffer would get it shiny.

thats a pretty good price, i was thinking around 1500, so i guess i was close! i had no idea that mine was a rare one, what makes it rare...just the year it was made? mine has 7399 kms on it. and i was hoping it actually went that fast, just so i can beat my friends on their enticer-340's lol. i was going to bring it to the grass drags this year, but i guess its not safe for the engine? thanks for all the help btw: it has a brand new camoplast track, would this also increase the value? sofar i've tryed "never-dull" aluminum polish, but i cant seem to get that chrome like appearance.

The track would probably increase value. The mileage will, of course decrease it, but it looks nice, so 1500 is around good. It is rare because it is the last year of this kind of Exciter, and not as many were produced.

You can take it on a grass drag, just let it idle for about 5MINs after the run and let it cool off. It is easy to overheat. Warm air+air cooled= hot. Granted, I was missing cooling fins on the head, but I still hosed it. I do not do grass drags though, snowmobiles are made for snow. The dirt wrecks slides and clips, and the skis and carbides. Overheating and jetting are issues too, so I just work on them, and run them on a stand. Maybe bring them to shows.

Remember, it is not just dirt that makes it dull, the scratches make it dull too. Have you tried buffing them out?

for the polish, all it says is to rip off a small peice of cotton cleaner, then scrub aluminum until the surface gets grey, then wipe off with a clean rag. im not sure if you can polish aluminum, is it safe to?

Yes it is. There WAS a factory sealer, but that is surly worn off by now, so you'll just have to polish it every summer to keep it looking nice.

sick man. i love these sleds. i rode a 1980 440 for years before i upgraded. at 120lbs i had the sled doing 90 on the flat ice rode. but i think it would have gone a little faster.

Yamaha 440. When you said (hosed it) did you actually mean put a hose to a hot motor??? Would not suggest that.. Hot aluminum does not like cold water.. My 2 cents...

As in hosed,I meant burned the piston, destroyed it... Oh, and I have the specs, just have to grab my service manual.
