sucking in air?
if my exciter is sucking in air, how long will it take to take a piston?

Open it up on a lake, about 45 seconds...It takes longer at slower speeds.

Depends on if it's already started to wear or not. If it's sucking air, fix it, or you'll seize it, period.

I would hope that it is sucking in air. You can't have combustion without it.
