87 Phazer, Track removal/spring replacement

I just went for a long ride up in Johnsburg, IL and towards the end of our day while sliding a corner I felt the track lock up and make a weird noise.

On inspection the spring had come loose and flipped around so it was prying into the track. I towed it home to avoid damage to the track and clips (some were damaged already).

My questions is on a 1987 Yamaha Phazer 480cc how do you remove the track to replace that spring?

Thanks in advance for the help and if there is another thread already out there point me that way, I wasnt able to find one.

you shouldnt have to remove the track to replace that spring, unless you want to. to get the spring off simply remove the bolts on each side of the tunnel that holds the pivot arm/crosshaft the spring is mounted on.

wow, I like the sound of that. Will I have to install it under pressure?

you can release the tension on those at the rails. should be a white plastic block with a metal retaining strap covering the spring. remove the strap and lift the spring up and over the plastic block.

which end broke, the rail end or the tunnel end?

The rail end, and it fliped around and is poking the track back by the rear bogie wheel.

The metal clip and white plastic block fell off and let the spring go. I found a few of the pieces a bit aways behind me, but they will be replaced.

might i suggest using this incident as a wake up call and take a few minutes to check every other nut and bolt on the sled?

some blue loctite might be your friend on certain bolts.

Noted. Which other bolts are at risk under pressure?

Turns out a retaining clip snapped and the spring broke free... all good now though. Minus a few clips
