Older Yamaha Phazers

I found a couple of Yamaha Phazers for sale for $500. The one is in perfect condition and runs good too, and the other just needs some new heads. I am just wondering if they are good sleds? Also, are they known to have any major problems. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Is that both sleds for $500? That's a deal. I just bought an '87 Phazer with 1800 miles on it in excellent condition for $550. Thought it wasn't hitting full speed at top end at first, but now realize there's nothing wrong with it, just that 7000 RPM is it's top speed. I've only rode mine once, but it's hella fun, takes off quick, has good low end torque, climbs hills and handles powder surprisingly well for such a short-tracked sled. Just doesn't have a lot of top end grunt. From what I've read the general consensus is that the first and second generation Phazers are reliable long-lived machines with no major problems associated with them. My only complaint is that they don't have a lot of top end, straight-line speed, but if your doing a lot of trail riding, I don't think that's gonna matter much. For only $500 that's a steal. I didn't get them, because I guess some people view of sleds are different. I went there and the hood was held on by a fiberglass resin, the track was frayed, missing clips, and needed new sliders, skis. The other sled was no where near complete. I wish he could have been more honest over the phone so I didn't waste my time.

Great sleds my son has one. It is light and easy to ride. There are lots of good used parts on ebay. 500 bucks is a steal

Ya I know I had the cash there ready to pick it up and I pulled up and was pretty mad. Over the phone he said the second sled just needed heads put back on and I got there and nothing was on that sled, but the motor in pieces.

I saw pictures, but it looked decent. Also, for whoever said it was a good deal, the track was totally shot. It may be a good deal to someone, but not me. I don't want to waste all the time to switch the tracks.

i woulda offerd 250 for em i mean both sound like they got there work made out for em but theyre phazers and parts are everywhere for em and theyre pretty good sleds overall and decently easy to work on

I was going to offer him that, but he said the lowest he would go is $300. It was really $400 with a Polaris Textron(I think was the model), which my friend would buy from me for $100. So it would have been $300 that way, but I haven't swapped a track and didn't want to start on that sled. He had the other track off the parts snowmobile and it was in good shape.

There are good deals out there. But I'd find something that only needs a carb cleaning, or something minor, cause you don't want a sled that you'll have to spend your first couple hours or days working on. I went thru what you almost did, when I bought one of my Phazers. A motor and about $500 buck later I was able to ride it. So instead of $500 which I paid for the sled, I then had to junk the motor and find another one. Thats the one in the picture. I love it and its been great, but didn't want to spend a grand. Hard lesson learned.

Ya I know there are better deals out there, just may take awhile. I like the phazers and I have heard they are reliable, but that one wasn't for me. The way the guy first talked it sounded like a good deal, but that's why I wouldn't want to buy something off ebay or sight unseen. After seeing some of the sleds that are available it makes me sort of wonder about selling my SRV, which was close to perfect condition.

Yep I agree, I've seen so much on E-bay. Strange stuff to. Like people trying to sell a sled for several thousand dollars, and they take pictures of the sled at night and you really can't get a good look at whats in the picture, and they expect you bid on the sled. Give me a break! I agree with you, there are some good deals out there to be had. But this day in age you have to see them in person. My third Phazer I picked up was a bargain, and the guy was up front and honest. It really did need a carb cleaning. He was mixing and injecting and it had been at least three years since he cleaned that carbs. Sickest carbs I've seen. When I got it home I soaked the carbs and replaced the fuel lines and put fresh fuel in. Has run like a champ ever since.

Does mixing the oil and injecting the oil cause the oil injection to fail? I heard this from the last guy I bought a sled off of? I am just curious to if it was still working on that phazer. Thanks.

No. But when you mix, your injecting oil at the carb and sending it thru your tank at the same time. Thats a double shot. The guy that I bought my last sled from said he didn't trust injectors on sleds, cause he said you never know when they will fail. Then you burn pistons. So he mixed 50 to 1 plus the injector worked fine. Holy crap I don't even know how the sled even moved. The carb was so gunked with oil residue. Carbs really are not setup to pump oil thru them, however I did a top end on one of mine last spring and i ran a tank of mixed fuel thru just so rings would seat, and lessen the chance of piston damage. After that tank I went back to fresh fuel and injecting oil. Honestly if you use a decent oil and keep an eye on carbs and injector and cables, possibility of failure is slim to none.

Well...um, I can tell you that it ran poorly. But this was during the spring and summer. I would get it out and prop the back up and run it a while. I never actually rode it, because of the time of year. I was more interested in getting the rings to seat. By the time I got down to the last gal. or so it was really hard on the plugs. Which brings up a point. What kind of plugs do you use? I have been using NGK, but have had poor luck lately with them. Thinking of changing to Champions.
I probably could have adjusted my screws on top of the carbs and leaned it out, but I prefer not to mess with once they are set. But if this was during riding season I would only have put a small,small amount of oil in with the fuel.

I use NGK's in my Polaris, and I also use to use them in my SRV. I don't know what are in my invader, but I would have to guess they are also NGK.
