My son's sled has a couple of issues, it goes through alot of mixing oil, can this be adjusted or is getting through at the fuel pump?
Also the TORS keeps coming on. Can this be disconnected?
you can check the oil cable for freeplay and the pump for alignment marks. whats your definition of alot of oil? compare to fuel usage like 1 qt/per tank of fuel. if you adjust the pump or the cable, be sure the throttle cable freeplay and idle are set first. do a search for tors, theres a big write up about it.
I'd say it's using appx 1.5 qts per tank. I'll check the sled with your suggestions, thanks for now. I cleaned the carbs, changed the plugs.... It has always run fine and started good, but just seems like it's using more oil than required, smokes alot while idling. As for the TORS, I'll try to give it more adjustment.
your not too far out of line. 10g tank at 1-1.5 qts is 40:1 or slightly more. if you recently cleaned the carbs, make sure the oil cable is properly sitting in the adjuster. seen a few folks have that hold open. plugs and oil are cheaper than pistons and cylinders so adjust/inspect accordingly.
Nothing to do with oil consumption, but i recently bought a '96 Vmax suspension I'm gonna put in a Bravo. It's a standard 121" track. If you have the same track suspension, could you give me the distance from center-to-center of the front to rear mounting bolts? Much appreciated, thanks!
29 7/8" center to center. from inside the tunnel down the front is 6 1/8" to center, the rear is 5 1/2" to center. dont forget the center idlers that mount at 17 7/8" to center off the front hole and down 3 3/4".
Hello Everyone!!! 1997 Yamaha vmax600XT motor question
Hi Everbody!! I am new on this forum as of today, so please bear with me. I just bought a 1997 yamaha vmax 600 xt from a friend that has had it from new. It has 5800 miles on it. It is in mint condition, and my friend has taken VERY great care of it. This motor in this thing seems to have a SERIOUS design flaw or something because he has had the motor rebuilt more than once, and the left cylinder is out of it yet again...(NO COMPRESSION). Have any of you guys had this sled, and had any trouble with the motor???? I put 50 miles on it for the first time this season,...and BAMM!! It only runs on ONE cylinder...Please respond.. I am at my wits end!!!!!!!!!! Thanks,, Joe
depending on the actual history of the sled, the twins from that year had a tendancy to eat the ring land pin at around 3000 miles. depending on the rebuild and the parts used, you would be in the time frame for it to happen again. there were updated parts to avoid the issue.
judging by your description, after 50 miles, fresh out of storage i presume, the design flaw may be in the tuner or the fuel quality. having never taken the time to figure the root cause and simply adding parts is a recipe for another disaster. at this point, i picture is worth alot.
Yamadad4... I had the time...(with a friend), to tear apart the sled, to look at the problem. This problem has happened twice before. If you take off the "Y" pipe for the exhaust, and look up at the piston, and rings with a mirror, You can see the horror yet "again". The rings caught on the exhaust port "again", and the rings...Especially the top one, is mangled beyond repair!!! Another $650.00 bill!!!!!! BOTH sides were replaced (for the same problem), around 3400 miles or so, and it now has 5800 miles, so you were right, around the magical 3000 mile mark, it happenes. How do I fix this problem for good???? This sucks!!! Sorry to unload, and thanks for any info you can provide, Thanks again, Joe. PS.. this is on a 1997 yamaha vmax 600 xc.
few things you can confirm would be were the updated pistons and rings used? who did the work and were parts installed properly? a little more history would help. what was replaced, oem parts, cylinders, etc.
other items to check would be condition of cylinders. these would need to be measured with a micrometer for bore limits, taper, or if they are out of round, assuming they werent replaced. piston rings, although new, should be verified for end gap. any parts associated with the top end like circlips, bearings and piston pin should be new on a rebuild.
quality fuel and proper jetting will also aid in longevity of the motor. minor detonation on a contuining basis will eat the ring stop pins. a couple extra bucks at the pump is cheap insurance.
Dan.. Sorry that I can`t really answer your question. Where is the "tors light" located? I have a friend who owned this sled that i got for13 yrs, and I can ask him tonight when he gets off work. He might know. I am VERY new to this whole snowmobile sport, BUT people know other people, so WE might be still able to find some answers yet. I`ll get back to ya soon. jrzmotorcycle
hi i have a 96 vmax xt and the brakes seem like their to tight but i dont know how to adjust them if someone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.
I was wondering if anybody could tell me why my sleds seems to smoke alot when idling. it runs fine but to me smokes excessively. it has 2500 miles. also does anybody know what it would cost to get the seat recovered?
I have a vmax 600xt twin, and the other day I flooded my machine, I bought it second hand, and it came with a mbr can, damn thing sure is "LOUD".....lol however, it flooded on the drive home, just before it shut off i was trying to fix my idling, and now I don't know where the idling has to be, i don't know if its too much open or too much close. where should my idling needle stay in order for it to stay on??
