Is there a difference between 96 600 crank and 98 crank?

Can someone tell me if there is a difference in the cranks in a 1996 vmax and 1998 vmax?

alot of difference, not interchangable. cases are different as yamaha changed their induction system in 97. compare the cylinders and you will see what i mean.

So a 96 crank will not fit in a 98 case then?

correct, to the best of my knowledge. 2 completely different engines.
