1989 Yamaha Exciter High Idle

Hey guys,

I have been looking through the forums and I cannot find a post that is the same issue as mine (unless I am missing it, sorry if I am reposting). But heres my issue and I hope you can help me.

I just baught a 89 exciter from my boss, and the things mint . He baught it at a swap meet and when he got it the carbs were dirty and it had bad gas in it. He cleaned the carbs to brand new, but left a little bit of the gas in there, and put a little fresh gas on top of it. The thing fires right up and idles beatifully, but as soon as you hit the throttle it jumps up to 3k and idles there, clutch engaged. For it to go back down you have to let it sit 5 minutes or so, then it idles normally again. People have told me numerous things that could be wrong with it, one being the little bit of bad gas left in it could have gunked up the carbs again, or something else that didnt make too much sense to me so I kinda forgot it.

If you guys could help me out I would really appreciate it.

It could be something as easy as adjusting the air bleed screws on the carbs, or bad crankshaft seals.

One thing with these 570cc Exciters, is that the double throttle cable has to travel across the bars, down the steering column, underneith the headlight cowling, then out over the air box to the tops of the carburetors. This is a lot of little twists and turns for the throttle cables to make, and over the years, and the 5 of 6 different 570 Exciters I have owned I have seen these cables get bent or twisted a couple times. If you reach up under the headlight cowling right where the cables take the 90deg turn heading towards the carb right behind the airbox, just make sure your cable housing is not bend or twisted. If they are it creates a jam point and the carb slides have a harder time returning to their original location at idle, hence having a higher idle. I had a 570 one year that had the cables so bent as soon as you started the machine, the sled took off out of the garage full throttle! Just something to look out for to all you Exciter owners! Good luck!
