Can't get skis off 94 Vmax

Purchased a used Vmax 650 this spring. I wanted to take the skis off to clean them up.... so I removed the cotter pins and nuts, but there is no way those bolts will move out through those holes! I noticed there is a "collar" on either side of the bottom of the shock that the bolt passes through. Those collars turn with the bolt! Should that be the case ? Are those collars simply spacers that have seized on to the bolt I wonder ? I've used penetrating oil galore!

How do I remove those skis ?? Help!

Thanks

Barry

You can put a similar threaded nut on the end of the bolt so the threads are protected and whack the bolt with a hammer.. it's likely that the bolt has corroded to the spacers.. when you get 'em out, put never-seize or some grease on the bolts so it helps prevent that from occuring in the future..

don't use the castle nut that holds the bolt on, they are not very stout and you will damage it, and on Sunday, there's no place open to get another one If you do use the castle nut, turn it around backwards, and be as gentle as you can. You can also try using a drift or punch to hit the center of the bolt, but still put a nut on it to protect the threads...

If all else fails, cut the bolts on the inside of the cradles and then you can get the bushings out and install new bolts.

Not sure if you got it figured out or not yet but I had the same exact problem on my 94 V-Max. I cut the heads off the bolds to get it apart.

Good luck if you didn't get it apart yet.

Hmmmm You mean ...

So... do you mean to cut the heads off of the bolts on the outside of the skis??? Not the cotter pin side, but the side that faces outboard ? That sounds like an idea!

I would soke them down with Pb Blaster and let it sit for a bit. The coller is rusted to the bolt so you will have to take a old nut and put it on the end and give it a wake with the BFH. If you bugger the bolt up you can aways replace it. Oh and yea anti seize the bolt when you put it back in.

Right next to the hex head of the bolt is where I cut (where it's circled in red on the photo below). Right between that and the spacer. Then hammer out the remainder of the bolt through the other side. Be sure to grease and replacement bolts before reassembling.

I had the exact same problem with the Bravo ski.
I soaked it in penatrating fluid for 2 days and used an impact gun on it.
Could not get it to turn free.

There was a guy nearby that had a welding outfit so when I showed him my problem he used an acetylene torch on it to heat it up then used his impact gun on it for about 2 minutes before it broke free then hammered out the bolt. The bracket was saved but I had to replace the bolt.
Took about 15 minutes for it to cool down too.
He said once they seize up they are a bugger to get free but it is possible.

If all else fails, hit it with a hammer. If that doesn't work, get a bigger hammer.

Good luck.
