need your help vmax 600 xt

I need some one that has a 96 vmax 600 xt to take some good pictures of the rear suspension mountings and maybe some measurements. I just bought a 95 vmax that had some terrible maintenance issues with the rear suspension. I got a full rear suspension for cheap but its out of a 600 xt. I'm pretty sure it will fit but some mounting pictures will really help with the geometry. Thanks in advance.

What I need is some close up pictures of where your mounts are so that I can drill in the right areas. The original suspension mounts for the middle and back I think are too far back, and the front I can't tell where it will be with the new one. I will post some measurements from the old mounts along with pictures hopefully today.

Mines tucked away in the corner for summer and cant get at it for good pictures. I did get 15 inches from the end rear bolt to the front of the middle bolt on the mounting brackets. see if your close. I know the 96 was the first proaction but according to the parts catalog the service manuals are the same. It might fit without much if any mods. Just a guess for know. Try this method to see how close you come.
First start the front mounting bolts. Then take the bolts out of the transfer rods in the rear of the suspention. This will take out the preload in the back shock. Then try the middle bolts. You might have to work it a bit so have some help. Then go to the rear and put the bolts back in the transfer rods and cont to tighten till they line up with holes. Give it a shot it might work. I just couldnt find out for sure if the tunnels for the 95 and 96 were the same but i bet they are. Chris

which ones are the transfer rods are they the ones along the shock or the ones that angle down and back to the slide rails? sorry I'm still really new to snowmobiles.

The transfer rods are the ones along the shock that angle down to the side rails. The bolt is the one on the end of the trasfer rod not the one that holds it to the rail. Keep track of where those white spacers are just incase it comes apart during the process. As far as i can tell your tunnel bracket holes look about the same as mine. Mine was 15 inches from back to middle also. So keep trying. I'm working all weekend and i work night so i wont be able to get any pics till mon or tues if you still need them. chris

im basically planning on doing the same thing. i have a 96 mountain max with a bad frame up front and a 95 le. i installed drop brackets on the 95 in the mean time and plan on moving the whole skid over. the 96 has a 136in track right compared to the 95 which is a 121in? plus my track on the 96 has a 196 studs and the 95 has none.

both skids that I'm working with are 121 inch so mine is a little more straight forward. The difference with mine are that the '97 skid has 11.5 inches of travel and rebuildable shocks . The 95 was the butt pounding original low suspension with basically throwaway parts
I'm not too sure but putting in the longer track on yours would require a longer tunnel or an extension if it truely is a 136. good luck too you with your modding and let us know how it turns out

The 96XT is 121. It had 10.5 inches of travel. If i get you right you want to move the MM skid to the 95 LE. You will need a tunnel extensions and so forth. A few mor mods and it would be a great sled. this is not anything i've done before.

ok so the 96 vmax 600 mountain max is also know as 96xt or 96xtc correct? now these models have pro-action 10s in them right. i know the 95 is 121. but is the 96 a 121 or 136. the sleds are at my place in michigan right now so i cant measure them. im trying to figure out everything befor i go up there in december so i can get at it. thanks

We are talking about 2 diff sleds. There was a 96 vmax xt with the first proaction skid which was a 121 with 10.5 inches travel. I dont know what the MMax was. They do have a MM with a 136 but i dont know the travel. I do know if you plan on putting the MM skid in the 95 le you will need extensions.

ok great, so i need extensions if it is a 136 but if its a 121 it should be a decent install. now is there anywhere where i can get a replacement shock for the proaction? i did notice while riding it was a little low. thanks

im not sure if it is or not. most likely it is. do you know of somewhere i can get it rebuilt at a reasonable rate. one of my lease favorite things to do on any vehicle are suspension and electrical work. can you rebuild it yourself?

I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself it has high pressure gas in it. There are plenty of shops that do rebuilds I can't think of a particular one now but I know the info is available on this forum.
