Question Yamaha cylinder boring?

I've got a question that I hope someone can help me with..

I have a low-mile, 1996 Yammi Venture 500 twin-cylinder, liquid cooled, 2-up sled I just bought for my wife to ride this year. Both pistons are burned and need of replacement (long story about the original owner, don't ask...LOL) with the MAG side being a little worse, where it needs either a new cylinder due to moderate cylinder wall scuffing or it needs to be bored .20" over to clean up the walls to get it running smoothly again.

My question is~ Are these cylinders coated with anything like Nikasil, Chrome, etc. or can the factory sleeve be bored & honed for larger replacement slugs?

I purchased an online manual factory manual that's pretty in-depth, but I couldn't find any info like this in the text anywhere... Did I miss something somewhere?

If the cyl. is just scuffed, try honing it first.
Yes, it is Nikasil Chrome lined and can be cleaned using muriatic acid to remove any piston residue before honing. they can also be replated.

Dang...I was afraid of that. The cylinder does need boring or replaced, as it's got a few moderately deep gouges in it from the broken ring end digging into it that honing won't get rid of unfortunately.

Try Cylinder re sleeving

I can install a steel sleeve into your cylinders and bore & hone them to fit new standard size pistons. It is cheaper than buying new Cyls. and if you damage one in the future it can be bored to an over sized piston. go to Motorcycle Cylinder Boring and Sleeving

Thanks for the reply, but I did manage to find a nearly-new, take-off, stock cylinder for my engine online, so all is well again.

I will bookmark your website though for future reference in case I need to do something like what you offer- which may be sooner than later, as I re-build quite a few powersport product engines in my spare time as a hobby for a change-up to get me away from the daily grind. (I build auto racing engines for a living)

I looked it up and 96 was a air cooled, and was cast iron! Then in 97 it was lq and Nic!
But if the cyl is nic it can still be repaired fairly inexpencive! Get a pair of pistons and send them all to US Chrome and they will ship them back to you ready to go!

It's not a '96, it's a '97 (typo) and it has an L/C engine. As I said before, I found a good cylinder and the job is done. The engine runs fine and we're ready for Winter!
