2002 Sx Viper Speedometer Problem

I have a 2002 Viper and recently the speedometer has been acting up. When riding it, it will jump around to different speeds. The tach and all other gauges still work, so I have ruled out an electrical problem (I think). I have heard that it was the bearing on the drive shaft? Anyone have any input or possibly how to fix it? Thanks for the help!

Pull the speedo cover off the drive shaft. Its under the secondary clutch. There it is a short cable connector that connects the drive shaft to the speedo gear in there.Make sure that it is nice and square (the edges). If not replace the connector and that speedo gear(housing) and grease it up.
While checking this out take a good look at the bearing in there too. They are also known for going bad.

I had a 02 viper and it was an electric start... well battery took a shit and i said hell i dont need that anyway, didnt think it mattered but it does! Everything worked well, tach/gas gauge etc but the speedo would do whatever it wanted... do u have a battery hooked up that is no good or not one at all?? that could be the problem

your speedo is electronic no cable to check but one thing you could check is the sensor pickup and the spline on the end of the jack shaft and make sure its clean, you will find this right behind and below your secondary.

You might have a bad bearing. I replace mine every year since it cant be greased . Sucks that Yamaha made it were you cant grease the bearing.
