2 barrel carb tuning

My 95 enticer is running reasonably well. Info in the machine on previous post. Ran it hard last weekend up Vail pass @11,000 ft+ Had 2 riders and one on a tow rope. Engine was not quite as snappy as i think it should. Carb settings were both mixture adjustment screws 1.5 turn out. Pulled plugs, cyl on the PTO side was nice- (grey) may be a touch on the hot side but not too bad. the other was quite dark and oily, likely running rich. What is the method of balancing the carbs? Do i just run it and keep checking the plugs or just go by feel? I really need some education here. I was under the impression that the adjusting screws were for idle only, and the A/F ratio at WOT was handled by main jets.

Compression test at 6000ft was 96 PSI . when corrected for elevation (96/0.8359)=115psi. seems a little low but even on both holes.

Thanks for the help, Dave

BOTH plugs should be a dark dry brown color. Black and oily isn't good, but neither is gray! Gray means WAY too lean or metal transfer! Make sure the choke isn't sticking open on the rich carb.

is this one 2-barrel carb or twin singles? If singles, are they Mikuni round slides?

This would be the two barrel carb same as on my Ovation! I really had a tough time with mine! It is possible that there are two different main jets! You may need to switch them! The thing that had me going was the choke plunger. The ruber on the botom was dried out.
