vibration in 2000 sxr 700

Hello All,

I am relatively new to snowmobiling and I am working on a 2000 Yamaha SXR 700 triple. Motor seems strong and sounds pretty radical. Sled has a vibration from take off. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start? Please dumb it down so I can follow I along. I appreciate your patience in advance.

Thanks a ton,

Ryan

I'd second that. Also check the track for missing studs, etc.

Thanks for the responses fellas.. The belt is brand new and the track looks good (all studs present) and no rips, tears or holes. I will add however that the sled has 7000 meticulously maintained miles on it. The problem might be better described as a clunking that hides it self a bit when I bring the sled to speed.
While tinkering last night I noticed some play in the secondary. There is a significant amount of play in and out on the shaft (the shaft doesnt move, the secondary does). I can see that there is a shim there but it is not working because the secondary is able to slide in and out slightly on the shaft. Is this normal? It seems like there should be more shims there. My polaris has a little play but not this much. Also there is a small amount of play when I turn the secondary. Is this normal (maybe slop in the chain?) How much is acceptable here?

Thanks Again

Ryan
This rain is eating all my snow!!!!!!

Seems like a really nice sled if we can straighten out this problem.

That is a self aligning feature that is built in for the secondary.
How new is the belt, has it been changes since the noise started?
Check for any worn spots on it by feel, you may not be able to see them.

Check your chain tension and adjust if necessary. If you lift the back off the ground and start it, remove the belt guard and give it a little throttle to get the clutches turning. If the belt has a bad spot, you'll see the clutched "bumping" over the bad spot.

I will get a new belt today (need a spare anyhow!) and try that. I will post an update this afternoon. Thanks for your patience and help, it is much appreciated.
