87 Enticer, no spark

I have an 87 enticer 340, which has no spark. If I test the wire going to the coil with the ignition on I get about a .5 reading on the voltmeter, I am guessing this is the signal coming from the stater... Is this enough? do I need a coil or a stater or am I overlooking something... dont know much about small engines... but I know enough about large engines..

the sled has been parked outside uncovered for about 5 years, turns over great, cleaned up the carb, and everything around... trying to get her going for as cheap as possible... ofcourse.

any help would be appreciated

Not sure if this will help but here is one thing to check. I also have an 87 Enticer and it has a switch at the carb. I believe it is designed to kill the engine if the throttle cable breaks or freezes up. If that system malfunctions, possibly it would have no spark. You can bypass the system by unplugging it an connecting the two wires together. (the two from the sled harness. It worked on mine.

Tors

That is the Throttle Overide System. My 89 Exciter has it too and its been bypassed for a long time. Good system when new but prone to alot of problems. If you bypass it be sure to check for the extra cable at the throttle control and unhook it too. Was the bottom cable on mine.
