1991 580 exciter

Any body know anything about the 580 exciter?
Any serious problems?
580 is that a misprint or maybe a 570?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

I have a 1990 and it's been a great sled for me. I cant afford to play and keep up with the big guys so when I went looking for a sled I knew I would be getting somthing old. I looked at Yamaha exclusively due to their build quality and reliability and the Exciter has not disappointed, It has snappy exceleration and will do 90 mph or better. Yes, the engine is a 570 and in 1991 I believe they were re-named Exciter II.

570 exciter 2

i to recently bought a 91 exciter 2 570. the only issue i have so far is a knocking in the bottom end. i don't know if it is the motor mounts, clutch, or crank. it might be something they all did to. do you notice a knocking that sounds like it might be from your starter or that area? i did read that the head bolts should be re tourqued every ten hours or so. it does start and run like a champ though. enough power for me to have fun but not so insane that it totally scares me. i also havent come onto it more than half throtle because im still breaking in a top end rebuild. easy to work on so far so for $700 i'm satisfied.

I actually have a 89 570 that I just got running right.
My friend stopped by the other night he was looking for a used sled and saw the tracks around my house.
I let him ride mine and I think he almost crapped his pants.

We got online to the local paper and found a 91 ex2 for 650 bucks
The guy said it has no problems and looks great so we are goin to look at it saturday morn.

I also found for 75 bucks another 91 ex2 with a seized motor.
Im wondering if all the parts interchange.
Would be nice to have a parts sled around for both of us.

any thoughts on what could be causing the knock in my sled? it seems to go away for the most part when i rev it up some. it seems to be stopping just before the clutch engages.

hey bill, you might be able to check yamahaparts.com to compare parts for the different years. my 91 has electric start, i dont know about the 89's having electric start or not so the crank case might not interchange. but for $75 i bet you guys will get your moneys worth out of it. oh yeah i also read somewhere that around those years the ignition changed? not quite positive in that though.

Mine also makes a vey slight noise at idle, I would characterize it as more of a rattle than a knock though. My buddy's 89 has the same noise as mine. Off idle the noise is gone and Im certain its not coming from inside the motor so Im not too concerned.

I would have to say mine is more of a rattle too. Doesnt really sound like lower end knock, sounds like something is loose.
I guess for the 400 I paid for the sled i'm not too worried.
Got an easy month of snow left here to tear it up.
I really like this sled so if it breaks or gets worse i'll spend some time this summer goin through it.

The elec. start was available on the 89 too. Thanx for the yamahaparts.com tip. Gonna check it out this weekend if I get time. Callin for more snow here so I'll prolly be on it instead of researchin it.

I have a 93 ex 2 570 sx. I agree w/above. Your problem is in your clutch. blow it out w/air and have a look at the rollers make sure the spin freely w/ your finger. Do not wet lube them. Also check your bearings and oil seal at the the gear box and clutch side of the tunnel. Make sure you have gear oil. This is the sleds only weak point and it is a result of lack of maintenace. Check it now before you beat the sled or you'll be out of luck later.

They are so light and powerful. A great reliable sled that with keep up with the 6's and 7's (not on the lake)

I used to have 1989 Exciter and it was great sled. Lacking in suspension but quick, reliable and very easy to handle. Mine did the knock thing as well when I shut it down but it never skipped a beat. The one thing I didn't ever figure out was why at higher altitudes, 6500 ft, it would bog in the deep stuff. Likely jetting or clutching but it ran so good otherwise I didn't want to mess around with it. Great choice for the beginner to intermediate sledder.

Ok the sled turned out to be an 89 Exciter II.

The motor is seized but all is there. I couldnt pass it up. Got it for 50 bucks and it has a new windshield, new track, new coil and CDI. Not to mention all the other parts that are the same as my exciter. Only difference is the hood that i can see right now. Its frozen to the ground and buried in snow so i'll get it when the weather warms a little.

Wow! Good score. Nice to have a parts machine, makes diagnosing problems a lot easier when you can start swapping parts without forking out lots of dough.
The 1989 is an Exciter, not an Exciter II but the majority of parts should be the same or at least compatible.

yeah it is actually an 89 exciter II
The numbers match, as well as the registration, im figuring it was a late 89 or something.
Its identical to mine except the hood and exciter II tags.
It had a combustion chamber and has a comet clutch setup (primary and secondary)and the belt is about an inch and a half wide.
I pulled the pipe and put it on mine today. Wow what a diff.
I get out of the hole alot faster and my top end has increased from 80 to about 95. I lost my nerve after that.
Cant wait to check out the clutch setup and maybe do some swaps.

does anyone know about what the dry weight of an exciter is? my friend had one and it was extremely light and fast for being a 570.
