stripped plug threads

I just bought a 91 exciter II and upon getting a closer look my friend noticed a bit of leak from one of the plugs. When we pulled the plug and put it back in we found the threads were stripped. I do have a spare set of heads. Is there a reliable quick fix other than pulling the heads off and swapping them? There is enough thread to take the plug down in. If not some tips to swap the head out, any tricks to ease the process and torque specs. My friend also said something about the low compression could have messed up my rings and pistons. The motor was supposedly rebuilt but I am starting to wonder how good of a job it was. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You can try a helicoil. Get one from the local Hardware store.

thanks for the reply folks. after talking to some people i decided to try my luck/skill at swapping out the heads to be safe. i checked the threads of the spare heads and all seems to be good. by the way i have not heard of heli-coil until i got on this site and EVERYBODY i talked to mentioned this product. it seems to be the duct tape of threads. thanks again, i'll probably be posting again for more info but will be sure to update on my project as soon as i get it done. by the way for tomacat, i got a chance to take a rip on an f7 firecat last year, it made me crap my pants.

Heli-Coils are the shizzle!! Better than new since it provides a stainless steel thread!!

well here we go. i got the heads off and checked the pistons, they slapped all over the place so now i have bought a new set of pistons and rings and am going to try that. it seems simple enough. we'll see in the morning. the only thing i forgot to grab was a new set of needle bearings for the wrist pin. i am going tocheck out the old ones in the morning and decide if i need to take a trip to town or not. it almost seems like the pistons were to small. i took the cylinders into work and measured the bore. stock is 73mm and i got the measurement of 73.59mm. i know that if you bore it out .020 that is what you get for a bore. i did pick up the oversized piston kit. we'll see how this goes. i'm starting to think i should have spent more than $500 on a sled. oh yeah i have, i'm rebuilding the motor,HA.

rebuild complete, it took four hours but it went pretty smooth considering my friends and my own experience with this job. after a bit of tweeking and a few pulls she started right up. it seems to run fine although i do have a little bit of a tap/rap coming from the very front bottom area of the crank case. i hope its just the starter, it is coming from that area. one of my buddies that was there said his brother has the same machine and it sounds the same. we'll find out if it blows up on me. if anybody has had any exciter II's could let me know if they had the same type of sound it would really ease my mind. thanks again to everybody who helped with advice.
