98 v-max very poor gas milage

I have a 98 v-max xtc dlx 700 triple .This machine is very nice and fast ,however I get extremely poor gas milage to where I am embarassed to even go out to ride with friends because I have to fill up so often .I would say i am getting 8 miles to the gallon . I just had it re-jetted and put on a new belt ,had the secondary cleaned and checked , I had one mechanic tell me it could be bad reed valves ??? I have sunk a lot of cash into this machine this year a side from changing the reeds this year (in the shop right now to have them checked ) I can't afford to do any huge mods to it.I may just dump it at the end of the year .ANY SUGGESTIONS ? oh yes ,the top end was redone in the fall one new piston but all new rings. When she is at about 6000 rpm it gurgls and spits but when you hit 7000 and up she runs like a charm ???it is hard to drive it slow through the trails

Hey Traper14...I have a 98 Vmax XT with the 700 Triple as well. And while no it's not the GREATEST sled for gas mileage, I rode just a couple of weeks ago with a Cat Pack and I was about 1/4 to 1/3 of a tank more than all of them. I have my clutch/jetting set for my altitude, so maybe that may be your problem? But if the dealer can't figure it out I don't know. I had put a Hauck Racing aftermarket can on it, it's called "The Huricane." It is pretty loud now after the three years I've had it on, but the sled runs with awesome power and throttle response with it on. I put my stock one on while trail riding, because I don't have to "burp" the sled. But if I'm looking for performance trail, and back country riding where I need the throttle response and power, then I put that on. I love the sled to death, and I've never (knock on wood) had to put a dime into the motor. I'm not gentle on it at all either, especially with a 2" paddle under it. However, I am selling it as of right now and going to be buying an F7 because the dealer is 150 yards from my house, and the suspension on the Yami just can't handle it anymore. Hope this helps, write back if you get this.

my bad gas milage

I just spoke to the yamaha mech. and he told me that the needle and seats were letting to much gas go by filling up the bowl and the floats were not adjusted properly .Would this contribute to bad gas milage I am thinking it must ,this should stop it from gurgling at lower speeds ?
And gas just went up here in manitoba but I feel sorry for the guys in BC

Yes, it would. Major over fueling going on.
