Is the airbox necessary

I got an Exciter with no airbox. Is the airbox absolutely necessary? If yes, is there a way to rejet or do ANYTHING different to bybass it. Also, without the airbox it makes it much easier to synchronize the carbs. Any help is appreciated.

No not absoluttly nessary, but you will spit a bit of raw gas back from the carbs! So some type of air intake tube is good! I have vellocity tubes with screens on my old race sled!

No air box is not a good for normal riding.Too much powder snow getting sucked in the motor could at the very least freeze up the carbs or at worst could take out the motor.A buddy of mine heard that if you cut holes in the air box that the sled would be faster.Went like hell on the road and then went and did some powder running.Lets just say it didn't come home under it's own steam.

I have a 1993 exciter sx with no air box i went with K&N filters and a bender racing pipe went from a stock 320 main jet to a 340 main jet.I then put a small piece of filter pad on the side of the carbs where the vents from the front hood are open to keep the snow away from carbs.Runs just fine in deep snow.
