89 Exciter Tach doesnt work

So i finally got to get my new to me 1989 Exciter out to load up and take home. Upon running it around in the yard before loading it up, i noticed that the tach doesnt work. I looked in the Clymers repair manual (not throughly) to see if there was anything on the tach, and i didnt see anything (at the time). Where should i start looking to see what might be the problem with the tach? Also, how do the side panels come off, i want to check the chain case lube and inspect the belt, but i dont see how to undo the sides. Other than replacing the seat, and the headlight, and checking the coolant i cant wait to ride!

probably the plug came unhooked behind the tach, when you drop the side panel down after you take the 2 bolts out, bang it foward with your palm.it slides on 3 pins that are located on bellypan

Which side panel are you talking about? Also, know anything about the brake light? It doesnt work when you apply the break, and i believe the bulb is good (i put a new seat on it, and it had the tail light assembly in it... i know i know... always check the bulb). We got 8" of snow today so it was time to play on it, rather than wrenching on it!
